James "Jimmy" Howard (born March 26, 1984, in Ogdensburg, New York) is an American professional ice hockey goaltender with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, the minor league affiliate of the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings.

[edit] Playing Career
Howard was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He was in net for the Red Wings four times in the 2005-2006 season posting a 1-2-0 record, a GAA of 2.99 and a save percentage of .904 ([1]). In the 2007-08 season during the month of February, Howard was in net for the Red Wings an additional four times, bringing his total NHL games played to 8. His current record in the NHL, as of the end of the 2007-08 regular season, is 1-4-0, a GAA of 2.56, a save percentage of .915 and a total TOI of 397 minutes. ([2]) Upon the retirement of Red Wings goalie Dominik Hasek in June 2008, Howard is expected to serve as the backup to Chris Osgood for the 2008-2009 NHL Season.
He holds the University of Maine school record for shutouts, goals against average and save percentage (all single season and career), NCAA records for his 1.19 GAA and .956 save percentage in the 2003-2004 season, and is the only NHL goalie to face a penalty shot in each of his first two games. He was also named to the 2005-2006 AHL All-Rookie team.[1]
