[edit] Politics
East Jerusalem, like all of Jerusalem, is under the full administrative and military control of the State of Israel. It was annexed by Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967. Even though the Palestinian National Authority is without political control over the area, Palestinian residents participate in PNA elections.
During the 2006 election for the Palestinian Legislative Council, Hamas won the electorate's 4 "open" seats while Fatah candidates won the remaining two seats reserved for Christians. Half of the Hamas members elected were detained by Israeli authorities during a crackdown in 2006. The Fatah candidates were Imil Jarjoui and Ivivian Sabella.
