Jerry Wainwright is the current head men's basketball coach at DePaul University. Since taking over at DePaul, he compiled a 43-48 record in his first three seasons as coach. During the 2007-2008 season, unhappy DePaul fans have vented their frustration with Coach Wainwright at http://firejerrywainwright.com The website is calling for the firing of Jerry Wainright, and a hiring of a new coach that can take DePaul basketball to the next level.
His first DePaul team did not make its own conference tournament. His second team failed to make the NCAA tournament despite having two players (Wilson Chandler and Sammy Mejia) selected in the 2007 NBA Draft. His third team finished 11-19, suffered losses (at home) to North Carolina A&T and UIC, blew double digit leads to Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Connecticut, and Villanova . . . and failed again to make the Big East tournament.
The Berwyn, Illinois native succeeded Dave Leitao on April 28, 2005. Formerly the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, the University of Richmond and Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Illinois. Wainwright was the head coach at the University of North Carolina Wilmington for eight seasons (1994-1995 through 2001-02). While with the Seahawks he accumulated an overall record of 136-103 (.569 winning percentage). Helping his team earn two trips to the NIT (1998 and 2001) and two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2000 and 2002), he also collected the program's first 20-win season (1998), the first NCAA Tournament berth (2000) and the first NCAA Tournament win (2002). Wainwright also led the school to two Colonial Athletic Association Tournament (CAA) championships (2000 and 2002) and two conference regular season titles (1998 and 2002).
