Jeff Baker made his Major League debut in 2005, as the Opening Day third baseman for the Colorado Rockies, playing a total of 12 games. He had been added to the Rockies lineup as a replacement for injured third baseman Garrett Atkins and on the return of Atkins, Baker was assigned to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the Rockies Triple-A affiliate.

In 2006, Baker played a full season for the Sky Sox hitting .305 with 20 homers and 108 RBI. He played most of those games in right field. He was named to baseball america all minor league team. As an outfielder for Colorado springs. He was then called up to the Rockies in early September and was rewarded with significant playing time in right.

On August 10th of 2007, Baker was hit in the head by a pitch from the Cubs right-hander Jason Marquis. He suffered from a concussion, but he returned fine 3 weeks later.

After losing 18 pounds in the off-season to improve his quickness, he is attempting to make the transition to second base in 2008. Currently, Baker is among a handful of candidates for the starting job and possesses the most potent bat of the group. He and Ian Stewart are, however, the only ones who do not have any experience at the position.
