Javine Dionne Hylton (born December 27, 1981 in London, England), more commonly known as simply Javine, is a British singer who has had moderate success in the UK singles chart.

[edit] Early life

For a spell of two years, she played Nala in a production of The Lion King on London's West End. In a potentially risky move, she opted to channel this experience of live singing into an audition for the returning Popstars, a TV talent show in which young hopefuls sought to be picked for a place in a new manufactured group. For the second series, Popstars: The Rivals, the format had been altered to allow for the creation of two groups, one boy-group and one girl-group, that would, in theory at least, though in practice failed to, battle it out for chart dominance.

Javine's gamble paid off as she was one of the last six contenders for a place in the girl-group, but she missed out on a spot in what became the chart-topping group Girls Aloud, and instead embarked on a solo singing career.

[edit] Recording career

In the summer of 2003, Javine released her debut single "Real Things", which featured a sample of M.O.P.'s hit "Ante Up". The single charted inside the UK top 5 at #4 and remains her biggest hit to date. Three further top 20 hits from her debut album followed, "Surrender (Your Love)" (which sampled the Diana Ross hit "Surrender"), "Best Of My Love" and a cover of Jade's "Don't Walk Away", a double A-side with a cover of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend".

Javine's debut album, Surrender, was released after her third single, "Best of My Love", in the summer of 2004. In spite of securing a songwriting partnership with the in demand Eg White, and well-known producers Stargate, along with the singles performing relatively well, her debut album only scraped into the UK top 75 and as a result she was dropped by her record label in late 2004.

Javine featured on Richard X's 2003 album Richard X Presents His X-Factor Vol. 1. Her collaboration with him, "You Used To" was due to be released as a single, but it was cancelled.

[edit] Eurovision

On March 5, 2005, she won Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up, the British heat of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, singing "Touch My Fire", co-written by Hylton. The other contestants were the 1996 UK entrant Gina G, as well as Andy Scott-Lee, the group Tricolore, and Katie "Jordan" Price. During the performance 'tit tape' used to hold dress in place came loose causing a wardrobe malfunction. Javine went on to represent the UK in the final in Kiev, reportedly suffering from a throat infection. With pre-final odds of 33/1, she finished with 18 points, in 22nd place, ahead only of France and Germany. When "Touch My Fire" was released as a single in its own right, it became Javine's fifth consecutive top 20 hit, charting at #18 in the UK singles chart.

[edit] The Games

Javine has since appeared on Series 4 of the Channel 4 programme The Games, which she went on to win. She began an affair with fellow The Games contestant and West End stage star MC Harvey, husband of Mis-Teeq singer Alesha. This led to a well-publicised feud between Javine and UK R&B superstar Jamelia. Jamelia referred to Hylton as 'a slag' on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and in an interview for Channel 4's Popworld she nominated her as 'the one person she would like to delete'. Jamelia also mentioned in an interview with a tabloid paper that she feels "Harvey traded in a Bentley for a Skoda". Harvey and Javine are now an item.

[edit] Second album

Javine is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to her second album, which was to be released in April 2008. However, this proved to be false. Release dates for the album are currently unknown.

In March 2006 Javine pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and was banned from driving for 18 months.

Javine appeared at number 29 in Chantelle's Top 50 Reality TV Stars on music channel Smash Hits beating One True Voice, Clea and Phixx who all also appeared inside the Top 50. The video for Real Things was shown.

There have been several rumours on music forums that Javine's first single from her 2008 album will be titled Make You Mine. The song was added onto Javine's official MySpace page but was later taken off due to unknown reasons.

[edit] Personal life

After suffering a life-threatening ovarian illness, Javine was eager to become a mother while she was still able. Within six weeks of making the decision to have a child with Harvey, Javine conceived while in Berlin.

On 23 February 2008 Javine gave birth to a daughter named Angel Hylton Harvey in Tooting, south London. She weighed 9lbs and was delivered in a water-birth in the London Birthing Centre. Both Javine's and Harvey's family were present at the hospital. Javine and Angel left the hospital the same day. Despite wanting originally to name the baby Berlin in honour of her conception place, the couple finally decided that Angel was the perfect name for their daughter who Javine views as a miracle given the severity of her ovary condition.
