Hello. My right name is Bill, and I go by the nickname of Jacky Tar on Wiki and Livejournal. Jacky Tar is a traditional slang term for sailors in the Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy. The term has gone out of common usage in the latter, but being a staunch traditionalist, I like to do my bit to keep it alive.
[edit] Background
I've been in the Canadian Navy for getting on eighteen years now, serving mainly from Canada's west coast naval base. I'm an electrical technician by trade, and at present I hold the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. In June I was posted ashore from HMCS Algonquin to take up a billet as an electrical instructor in the Engineering Division of the Canadian Forces Fleet School in Esquimalt, BC.
In my off-time, I like to make contributions to Wikipedia (of course), as well as play around with 3D CGI modelling and rendering software such as Poser, Bryce and Lightwave. I also maintain a LiveJournal (link available in the At A Glance box to the left), and I am active in the Society for Creative Anachronism. I read omnivorously, but am particularly fond of science fiction and fantasy. I also participate in the National Novel-Writing Month, but have yet to successfully complete the challenge.
I believe firmly in the potential of the Internet as a force for good in the world. The Internet and a now-relatively cheap computer gives everyone a voice; for the first time, direct writer-to-reader mass publishing is possible. Unfortunately, the Internet also has the vices of its virtues; it is distressingly easy for people and corporations to abuse this, thus the proliferation of pop-up boxes with advertisments, spam and web-based pornography, to name but three. Wikipedia has the potential to provide information with a high degree of accessibility and accuracy, provided all the contributors are willing to accept review input and correction.
