Jacques Fesch nasce il 6 aprile 1930 a St. Germaine-en-Laye, vicino Parigi, da una ricca famiglia di origine belga. Educato cristianamente ma debole di carattere e sviato dall’esempio del padre, ateo e cinico banchiere di successo, a 17 anni perde la fede e si avvia verso una giovinezza priva di ideali e di freni morali. A 21 anni sposa civilmente Pierrette Polack, che da lui aspetta un bambino. Dopo il fallimento di vari tentativi sul lavoro, lascia la moglie e la figlia, nauseato da una vita senza senso nella quale non riesce a trovare la felicità. Sogna di evadere dalla realtà soffocante che lo circonda e di andare a navigare nel Pacifico e, per procurarsi il denaro necessario all'acquisto della barca, progetta una rapina ad un cambiavalute. Ma qualcuno dà l'allarme e, nel panico dell'inseguimento, Jacques uccide un agente di polizia e viene arrestato. Al termine di un processo, per vari versi discutibile, giunge la drammatica condanna a morte, che lo porterà alla ghigliottina il 1° ottobre 1957, a soli 27 anni e mezzo... I suoi scritti dal carcere, pubblicati a partire dagli anni settanta, riveleranno un aspetto insospettato della personalità e dello straordinario cammino di fede di Jacques, suscitando anche numerose conversioni. Il 21 settembre 1987 il Cardinale di Parigi, Jean Marie Lustiger, aprirà l'inchiesta diocesana in vista della beatificazione.
