[edit] Origin and recording
The song's lyrics were written by guitarist Mike McCready. This marked his first time contributing lyrics to a Pearl Jam song.[1] The song's music was co-written by McCready and lead singer Eddie Vedder.
[edit] Reception
David Fricke of Rolling Stone called it a "superb finish" to the album. Fricke said, "The song starts quietly, then climbs and peaks like a combination of "Stairway to Heaven" and the Who's "The Song Is Over" -- a mirror image of Vedder's stumble through each line from night into light. "I will not lose my faith," he promises under thunderclap guitars, with such assurance that even if you don't agree with anything else on this record, you believe him."[2] The song was an album track pick at Allmusic, along with "Life Wasted", "World Wide Suicide", and "Severed Hand". In Allmusic's review of the album the song was described as a "deliberately escalating epic that gracefully closes the album on a hopeful note."[3]
[edit] Lyrical meaning
Mike McCready about "Inside Job":
I'd been thinking about some stuff for a year or two and searching for kind of a spiritual answer to whatever maladies were in my life. I realized that I had to go inside myself first before I could be open to outside ideas. And that's kind of what the premise was.[4]
[edit] Live performances
The song was premiered live at the band's May 9, 2006 concert in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[5] A live performance of "Inside Job" can be found on the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
