[edit] Origin and recording

The song features lyrics written by frontman Eddie Vedder and music co-written by Vedder and guitarist Mike McCready. Stone Gossard on the song:

Ed had a really strong lyric. It's a powerful emotional state for him to be singing about. He really felt like it had to be perfect. We didn't spend a lot of time cutting it. But in terms of getting the guitars right, the thing that kept happening was that we kept pulling everything off. As soon as we'd put something down, it was like, 'No, just let it be the drums, bass, vocals and these simple chords.'" We've been playing it in rehearsal and we're still learning it and exploring it.[1]

[edit] Reception

In Allmusic's review of the album the song was called "a slow-burning cousin to "Black" that finds Pearl Jam seamlessly incorporating soul into their sound."[2] Jayson Greene of Stylus said, "There is real joy in hearing [Vedder] let it rip again...testing out some openhearted soul-man pleading on 'Come Back'."[3]

The song was featured in the Friday Night Lights episode "Wind Sprints". It was also featured in the October Road episode "Forever Until Now".

[edit] Lyrical meaning

According to Eddie Vedder at a June 1, 2006 concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this song is a follow-up to "Man of the Hour" off of the Big Fish soundtrack. "Come Back" is set with the same young man from part one talking to the departed two months later.[4]

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's May 5, 2006 concert in New York, New York.[5] Live performances of "Come Back" can be found on the "Life Wasted" and "Gone" singles. A performance of the song is also included on the DVD Immagine In Cornice. Eddie Vedder has dedicated live performances of the song to Johnny Ramone.
