A Fellow Named Odd

There was once a fellow with the given name of Odd; His parents in their weariness had thought they named him Todd. And when they found their error they chalked it up to will of God, And doomed him to a life of being mocked for being flawed.

So Odd was doomed to a life of gloom By his name with a lack a “T”. In class, he found he was called a clown, And readily labeled a freak. His hostile peers soon confirmed his fears That he just wasn’t meant to fit in. And he took to his name, growing ever more strange, With a permanent upside down grin.

Now lucky for Odd, in a world full of clods, There was someone who saw through his name. While his coworkers laughed at his nominal gaffe, There was someone who loved him the same. She said, “I don’t care about what name you bear, Just as long as you care about me.” So they married that day and the wedding bells played In a rather odd ceremony.

The years slowly passed and as Odd faded fast He began to prepare for his death. And he told his dear wife “when I leave this here life, Will you honor my final request? See, for forty-three years I’ve been teased by my peers, And I won’t let it fly when I’m dead. So instead of my name on my tombstone proclaimed, Could my tombstone be left blank instead?”

But his plan didn’t work, for as people walked by, They’d see that blank tombstone, and say with a sigh…

“That’s Odd.”
