[edit] New Year's Revolution

Further information: New Year's Revolution (2007)

The first pay-per-view of 2007 was New Year's Revolution, a Raw-brand exclusive event that took place on January 7, 2007 from the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. It was the third annual New Year's Revolution and the final Raw brand-exclusive event. The official tagline was "The Revolution Continues..."

There were eight matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main event was John Cena versus Umaga for the WWE Championship, which Cena won by pinning Umaga with a roll-up. One of the predominant matches on the card was Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton) versus D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) for the World Tag Team Championships. The match ended in a no-contest after Triple H legitimately tore his right quadriceps; as a result, Edge and Orton retained the titles. Another featured match on the undercard was a Steel Cage match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship between Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro. Hardy won the match and retained the title by escaping the cage.

Jeff Hardy and his brother Matt would continue to face MNM members Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury, defeating the two later in the month. On the January 27 edition of Raw, Shawn Michaels, along with John Cena, defeated Edge and Randy Orton to win the World Tag Team Championships. Cena continued feuding with Umaga and faced off against him later in the month.

[edit] Royal Rumble

Further information: Royal Rumble (2007)

Royal Rumble 2007 took place on January 28, 2007 from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. It was the twentieth annual Royal Rumble event and was an inter-brand event, as it featured performers from Raw, SmackDown!, and ECW. The official theme song was "Drones" by Rise Against. This marked the first time the ECW brand participated in the Royal Rumble match, meaning the winner of the Royal Rumble match would receive a match at WrestleMania for his choice of the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, or ECW Championship.

There were five matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main event was the annual 30-man Royal Rumble match, which featured performers from all three brands. The Undertaker, the thirtieth entrant, won by last eliminating Shawn Michaels, the twenty-third entrant. The primary match on the Raw brand was a Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship between John Cena and Umaga. Cena won the match and retained the title after Umaga was unable to answer the referee's ten-count. The predominant match on the SmackDown! brand was Batista versus Mr. Kennedy for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Batista won by pinning Kennedy after a Batista Bomb. The featured match on the ECW brand was Bobby Lashley versus Test for the ECW Championship, which Lashley won after Test was counted out.

On the February 5 edition of Raw, Undertaker chose to face Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. Following the Royal Rumble, Bobby Lashley and Umaga became involved in the angle between Vince McMahon and Donald Trump, and faced off against each other at WrestleMania 23 in a match billed as the "Battle of the Billionaires." After being the last eliminated in the Royal Rumble match, Shawn Michaels became the number one contender to the WWE Championship at WrestleMania by defeating Edge and Randy Orton on Raw.

[edit] No Way Out

Further information: No Way Out (2007)

No Way Out 2007 took place on February 18, 2007 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. It was the ninth annual No Way Out event and the final branded pay-per-view before WWE pay-per-views became tri-branded.[1][2] The official theme song was "Powertrip" by Monster Magnet.[3]

There were eight matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main event was a tag team match featuring Batista and The Undertaker from SmackDown! against John Cena and Shawn Michaels from Raw, in which Cena pinned Undertaker after Batista, Michaels, and Cena delivered a Spinebuster, Sweet Chin Music, and FU, respectively. The main match on the undercard was an interpromotional Six-man tag team match between featuring the team of Chris Benoit and The Hardys (Matt and Jeff) facing the team of MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) and Montel Vontavious Porter, which was won by the Hardys and Benoit after Benoit forced Mercury to submit to the Crippler Crossface.

After No Way Out, The Undertaker continued his feud with Batista over the World Heavyweight Championship, which led to a match between the two for the title the following month. Chris Benoit and MVP continued to feud over the United States Championship. MNM split up after No Way Out, as Joey Mercury was released from the WWE on March 26, 2007. The Hardys went on to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match, the following month.

[edit] WrestleMania

Further information: WrestleMania 23

WrestleMania 23 was an inter-brand pay-per-view, featuring performers from the Raw, SmackDown!, and ECW brands, that took place on April 1, 2007 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.[4] It was the twenty-third annual WrestleMania, the first WrestleMania held at Ford Field, and the second WrestleMania held in the Detroit metropolitan area (following WrestleMania III).[4] The event featured two theme songs: "Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva and "The Memory Will Never Die" by Default.[5][6] The tagline was "All Grown Up."[4]

The 80,103 in attendance pumped an estimated $25 million into the local economy, and, at that time, made the event the highest grossing one-day live event in WWE history, grossing more than $5.38 million in ticket sales.[7] This made WrestleMania 23, at the time, the highest grossing pay-per-view in WWE history and the highest grossing event in professional wrestling history in North America, breaking the previous record of $3.9 million held at WrestleMania X8.[8] With 1.2 million buys, the event had one of the highest WrestleMania buyrates ever.[9]

The main match on the Raw brand was John Cena versus Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship, which Cena won by forcing Michaels to submit with the STFU.[10] The predominant match on the SmackDown! brand was Batista versus The Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Undertaker won by pinfall after performing a Tombstone piledriver.[11] The primary match on the ECW brand was an 8-man tag team match between The ECW Originals and The New Breed, which The ECW Originals won.[12] The featured matches on the undercard included Bobby Lashley versus Umaga and an interpromotional Money in the Bank ladder match.[13][14]

Batista would continue feuding with The Undertaker over the World Heavyweight Championship, and would face off against him in a Last Man Standing match at Backlash.[15] Cena would also continue his feud with Michaels, as he would loose a non-title match against him on the April 23 edition of Raw.[16] The angle between The New Breed and The ECW Originals continued and concluded in a six-man tag team tables match at One Night Stand.[17]

[edit] Backlash

Further information: Backlash (2007)

Backlash 2007 took place on April 29, 2007 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. It was the ninth annual Backlash event and the first pay-per-view (other than WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, and the Royal Rumble) to be tri-branded.[18] The official theme song was "There and Back Again" by Daughtry.[19]

There were six matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main match on the Raw brand was a Fatal Four-Way match for the WWE Championship involving champion John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, and Shawn Michaels, which Cena won by pinning Orton.[20] The featured match on the SmackDown! brand was a Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship between The Undertaker and Batista. The matched ended in a no-contest when both men were unable to answer the ten count.[15] The primary match on the ECW brand was Bobby Lashley versus Team McMahon (Umaga, Vince and Shane McMahon) in a Handicap match for the ECW World Championship. Vince won the title and the match for his team after pinning Lashley.[21]

The Undertaker and Batista continued their rivalry, which culminated in a Steel cage match, where both men escaped the steel cage at the same time, therefore The Undertaker was declared the champion. Edge defeated Mr. Kennedy on the May 7 edition of Raw to win the Money in the Bank contract.[22] Edge cashed in his opportunity on the following edition of SmackDown, when he speared The Undertaker to win the World Heavyweight Championship.[23][24] The feud between Team McMahon and Bobby Lashley continued as Mr. McMahon gave Lashley his rematch at Judgment Day, which was another 3-on-1 handicap match for the ECW World Championship.

[edit] Judgment Day

Further information: Judgment Day (2007)

Judgment Day 2007 took place on May 20, 2007 from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. It was the ninth annual Judgment Day event and the first Judgment Day event since 2003 to be an inter-brand pay-per-view. The official theme song was "I Don't Wanna Stop" by Ozzy Osbourne.[25]

There were eight matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main match on the Raw brand was John Cena versus The Great Khali for the WWE Championship, which Cena won by forcing Khali to submit to the STFU. The featured match on the SmackDown! brand was Edge versus Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Edge won by pinning Batista with a school boy.[26] The primary match on the ECW brand was a Handicap match for the ECW Championship between Team McMahon (champion Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and Umaga) and Bobby Lashley. Lashley won the match by pinning Shane McMahon; however, he did not win the title since he did not pin the champion, Vince McMahon.[27]

Bobby Lashley and Team McMahon continued their rivalry, as Mr. McMahon was forced to book himself against Lashley at One Night Stand in a Street Fight for the ECW World Championship. Edge and Batista also continued their rivalry over the World Heavyweight Championship after Batista defeated Mark Henry, Kane and Finlay in a Fatal Four-Way match to become the number one Contender to the title.[28] On the May 29 edition of Raw, Rob Van Dam claimed that Randy Orton should not have attacked Shawn Michaels at Judgment Day. Orton then challenged Van Dam to a match at One Night Stand.[29]

[edit] One Night Stand

Further information: One Night Stand (2007)

One Night Stand 2007 took place on June 3, 2007 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.[30] It was the third annual One Night Stand event and was an inter-brand pay-per-view, featuring talent from Raw, SmackDown!, and ECW.[30] The official theme song was "Famous" by Puddle of Mudd.[31]

There were eight matches on the card and one dark match, which took place before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main match from the Raw brand was a Pinfalls Count Anywhere match for the WWE Championship between John Cena and The Great Khali. Cena won the match and retained the WWE Championship by pinning Khali after executing an FU off a crane onto the arena floor.[32] The predominant match on the SmackDown! brand was Edge versus Batista in a Steel Cage match for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Edge won by escaping the cage.[33] The primary match on the ECW brand was Vince McMahon versus Bobby Lashley in a Street Fight for the ECW Championship, which Lashley won by pinfall after performing a spear.[34] The featured matches on the undercard included Rob Van Dam versus Randy Orton in a Stretcher match and a Ladder match for the World Tag Team Championship between The Hardys (Matt and Jeff) and The World's Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas).[35][36]

Randy Orton ended his feud with Rob Van Dam after giving him a kayfabe concussion during the event.[35] Orton then continued his "Legend Killer" gimmick and would go on to defeat Dusty Rhodes and Sgt. Slaughter the following month.[37][38] Batista and Edge's feud continued as the two faced off against each other at Vengeance: Night of Champions in a "Last Chance match."[39] Lashley concluded his feud with Vince McMahon following the event, but was stripped of the ECW Championship after being drafted to the Raw brand.[40] From there, Lashley began to pursue the WWE Championship, facing off against Cena for the title at The Great American Bash.[41]

[edit] Vengeance: Night of Champions

Further information: Vengeance: Night of Champions

Vengeance: Night of Champions took place on June 24, 2007 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. It was the seventh annual Vengeance event and an inter-brand pay-per-view. The official theme song for the event was "Gone" by Fuel.[42] The tagline for the event was "Night of Champions," as all nine championships from the three brands were competed for. This event was notable for being on the weekend of the Chris Benoit double murder and suicide case. Chris Benoit, who was originally booked to face CM Punk for the vacant ECW World Championship, legitimately no-showed due to "personal reasons."[43]

There were nine matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main match on the Raw brand was John Cena versus Mick Foley versus Bobby Lashley versus Randy Orton versus King Booker for the WWE Championship. Cena won the match and retained the WWE Championship after pinning Foley following an FU.[44] The featured match on the SmackDown! brand was a "Last Chance match" for the World Heavyweight Championship between Edge and Batista, which Edge won by count-out.[45] The primary match on the ECW brand was CM Punk versus Johnny Nitro for the vacant ECW World Championship, which Nitro won by pinfall after performing a corkscrew neckbreaker from the middle rope.[46]

On the June 26 edition of ECW, CM Punk defeated Elijah Burke in a Two out of three falls match to become the number one contender to the ECW Championship.[46] On the July 6 edition of SmackDown!, Kane was named the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship after he appeared as the special guest on Edge's Cutting Edge segment.[47] Edge held a celebration for himself on the July 13 edition of SmackDown!, and was attacked by Kane, and was therefore had to vacate the World Heavyweight Championship as a result of a legit injury. The Great Khali went on to win a 20-man battle royal to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.[48][49] On the July 2 edition of Raw, Bobby Lashley won a "Beat The Clock" match, defeating Shelton Benjamin. As a result, he became the number one contender to the WWE Championship.

[edit] The Great American Bash

Further information: The Great American Bash (2007)

The Great American Bash 2007 took place on July 22, 2007 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. It was the fourth annual Great American Bash event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment and featured performers from the Raw, SmackDown!, and ECW brands.[50] The official theme song was "The Church of Hot Addiction" by Cobra Starship.[51]

There were nine matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view. The main match on the Raw brand was John Cena versus Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship, which Cena won by pinfall after delivering an FU.[52]. The predominant match on the SmackDown! brand was The Great Khali versus Batista versus Kane in a Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Khali won by pinning Kane.[53] The primary match on the ECW brand was John Morrison versus CM Punk for the ECW Championship, which Morrison won by pinning Punk.[54] The featured matches on the undercard included Montel Vontavious Porter versus Matt Hardy for the WWE United States Championship and Randy Orton versus Dusty Rhodes in a Texas Bullrope match.[55][56]

John Morrison and CM Punk continued to feud over the ECW Championship. On July 31 edition of ECW, CM Punk defeated Elijah Burke and Tommy Dreamer in a Triple Threat match to earn a match the next week against Morrison, which Punk won. [57][58] As a result of winning, Punk became the number one contender to the ECW Championship. On July 27 edition of SmackDown!, Khali had his Championship Celebration which Batista interfered in. After the celebration was destroyed, Batista challenged Khali to a match for the World Heavyweight Championship match.[59] On July 23 edition of Raw, John Cena teamed with Candice Michelle in a 3-on-2 handicap match against Umaga, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, which Cena and Candice won. After the match, Randy Orton delivered an RKO to Cena, and announced that he was the new number one contender to the WWE Championship.[60]

[edit] SummerSlam

Further information: SummerSlam (2007)

SummerSlam 2007 took place on August 26, 2007 at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.[61] It was twentieth annual SummerSlam and featured performers from the Raw, SmackDown!, and ECW brands.[62] The official theme song was "Whine Up" by Kat DeLuna with Elephant Man.[63] The event featured two taglines: "The Biggest Party of the Summer" and "The Party is Over."[64] There were eight matches on the card and one dark match, which was held before the event went live on pay-per-view.[65][66] With 537,000 buys,[67] the general reaction to the pay-per-view was positive.[61] However, many were disappointed by the match between Batista and The Great Khali,[68][69][70] which was given a 1 out of 10 rating by SLAM! Sports.[61]

World Wrestling Entertainment had originally planned an angle between the cast of the Jackass TV series and Umaga, with the conclusion of the feud in a match at SummerSlam.[71] Their storyline was scheduled to begin at the previous pay-per-view event, The Great American Bash, but was canceled after the Jackass cast dropped out due to the negative media attention surrounding the Chris Benoit double murder and suicide.[71] The main match on the Raw brand was John Cena versus Randy Orton for the WWE Championship, which Cena won by pinfall after performing an FU.[72] The predominant match on the SmackDown! brand was between The Great Khali and Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Batista won by disqualification after Khali hit him with a steel chair.[73] The primary match on the ECW brand was John Morrison versus CM Punk for the ECW Championship, which Morrison won by pinning Punk while using the ropes for extra leverage.[74] The featured matches on the undercard included Rey Mysterio versus Chavo Guerrero and Triple H versus King Booker.[75][76]

CM Punk continued to face John Morrison, defeating him for the ECW Championship the following month on ECW.[77][78] The day after SummerSlam, Orton interfered in a match between Cena and King Booker and intensified the feud by attacking Cena's father.[79] Khali and Batista faced each other as part of a Triple Threat match the following month; Batista was victorious in this match and won the World Heavyweight Championship.[80][81]

With the exception of the Batista vs. Khali match, which is entertaining in a car-crash sort of way, nothing on the show is offensive. However, it isn’t an exciting enough show to dedicate three straight hours to.”

I never wanted to see this little nugget of crap anyway, but I at LEAST expected some kind of fucking conclusion. Now we are back in limbo. Batista won, but still isn’t champion. Fuck making jokes, this whole damn thing is a big gooey diarrhoea-esque mess. Get the belt off Khali and fire him ASAP. Then fire the booking team. Preferably out of a cannon.”
