New Year's Revolution (2007) was the third and final annual New Year's Revolution professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on January 7, 2007 at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri and was the final Raw brand exclusive pay-per-view event.[2][3] The tagline was "The Revolution Continues..."[4]
The main event was John Cena versus Umaga for the WWE Championship, which Cena won with a roll-up.[5] One of the predominant matches on the undercard was Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton) versus D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) for the World Tag Team Championship, which ended in a no-contest after Triple H legitimately injured his right quadriceps.[6] Another primary match on the card was a Steel cage match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship between Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro, which Hardy won by escaping the cage.[7]
Many of the existing feuds carried on after the event. Notably, Jeff Hardy and his brother Matt would continue to face MNM members Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro, defeating the two the following month at the Royal Rumble.[8] On the January 29 edition of Raw, Shawn Michaels, along with John Cena, defeated Edge and Orton to win the World Tag Team Championship.[9][10] Cena would face Umaga at the Royal Rumble in a Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship; Cena won the match and ended his feud with Umaga.[11]

[edit] Background
The main feud heading into New Year's Revolution was between John Cena and Umaga, with the two feuding over the WWE Championship. This feud indirectly began during Cena's feud with Kevin Federline. On the November 6 edition of Raw, Cena interfered in Umaga's match while accepting a challenge to a match by Federline.[12][13] The next week, Jonathan Coachman booked a match between Cena and Umaga, which ended in a no-contest due to interference.[14][15] On the November 27 edition of Raw, Umaga (through Armando Estrada) issued a challenge to Cena for the WWE Championship, which Cena accepted.[16][17] The next week, after his match, Cena was assaulted by Umaga, and both were confronted by security. Afterwards, neither of them could touch each other outside of a match until New Year's Revolution.[18][19] On the December 18 edition of Raw, Cena, along with Triple H and Shawn Michaels, faced off against Umaga, Edge and Randy Orton. The match ended in a no-contest.[20][21] During Cena's No Disqualification match with Federline on the January 1 episode Raw, Umaga came to the ring and hit Cena with the title belt, which allowed Federline to pin Cena for the win. This led to a 4-on-1 handicap match later that night between Nitro, Coachman, Umaga, and Estrada and Cena, where Cena attacked Umaga with a steel chair, causing the disqualification.[22][23]
Another feud leading up to the event was between Johnny Nitro and Jeff Hardy. In September 2006, Hardy challenged Nitro numerous times for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, but failed to win it due to repeated interference by Melina (Nitro's then-girlfriend).[24][25][26] Hardy finally defeated Nitro and won the title on the October 2 edition of Raw.[27][28] On the November 6 edition of Raw, Eric Bischoff, the General Manager for the night, scheduled a match between Hardy and Nitro for the title. In the match, Melina interfered and caused Nitro to get disqualified. As a result, Hardy retained the title.[12][13] Bischoff then scheduled a No Disqualification rematch, which Nitro won after interference from Melina.[12][13] The following week, Hardy won back the title by defeating Nitro in a Ladder match.[14][15][29] On the November 27 edition of Raw, Nitro and former tag team partner Joey Mercury, as MNM, accepted The Hardys' open challenge for December to Dismember.[16][17] The Hardys won the match.[30][31] At Armageddon in December, MNM and The Hardys competed in a Fatal Four-Way Ladder match also involving Dave Taylor and William Regal and WWE Tag Team Champions Paul London and Brian Kendrick. London and Kendrick won the match and retained the title.[32] During the match, Mercury legitimately broke his nose when he was struck in the face with a ladder.[32] On the December 18 edition of Raw, Nitro challenged Hardy to a Steel Cage match at New Year's Revolution.[20][21]
The feud between Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton) and D-Generation X (DX; Triple H and Shawn Michaels) began on the October 9 edition of Raw. Edge and Orton both have had problems with DX in the past and formed an alliance against them.[33][34] For consecutive weeks, Triple H and Orton competed in singles matches.[35][36] Eventually, at Cyber Sunday, Rated-RKO defeated DX with the assistance of Special Referee Eric Bischoff.[12][13] On the December 11 edition of Raw, Flair assisted DX in an ambush by Rated-RKO and Kenny, and Coachman came out to announce a six-man tag team match, where DX and Flair again emerged victorious.[37][38] DX would face Rated-RKO for the World Tag Team Championship at New Year's Revolution.[22][23]
The feud between Ric Flair and Kenny Dykstra (originally just Kenny) stemmed from Flair's feud with the Spirit Squad, which Dykstra was a part of. On the October 23 edition of Raw, Dykstra was angered by his teammates' recent losing streak against Flair, and he proved himself by defeating Flair that night.[35][36] Two weeks after defeating the Spirit Squad for the World Tag Team Championship, Flair and Roddy Piper lost their title to Rated-RKO.[14][15] The legitimate reason behind their title loss was that Piper was diagnosed with cancer and had to immediately leave the show.[39] Flair, however, continued to feud with the Spirit Squad, defeating them all at Survivor Series with his team of WWE legends.[40] On the November 27 edition of Raw, Flair teamed up with DX to take on the Spirit Squad in a 3-on-5 handicap match. Flair and DX won, and DX packed them all in a crate (excluding Dykstra) and kayfabe sent them to Ohio Valley Wrestling.[16][17] This left Flair to feud with Dykstra. It was announced that Flair would face Dykstra at New Year's Revolution.[22][23]
[edit] Event
Before the event went live on pay-per-view, Vladimir Kozlov defeated Eugene in a dark match.[1] The first match that aired was a Steel cage match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship between Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro.[41] The match included various high-flying maneuvers like top-rope dropkicks and powerbombs off the top of the cage.[42] Melina, also made her presence known during the contest, especially when she used her metal-studded belt to whack Hardy’s hands and keep him from climbing up top.[42] The vicious assault allowed Nitro—who was hanging upside-down on the cage—to recover and almost climb out of the cage.[42] Regardless, Hardy pulled Nitro from the top of the cage and nearly scored a pinfall after a Swanton Bomb, but Nitro's foot on the top rope stopped the referee's 3-count.[42] Later in the match, Nitro made it over the cage. Just as Nitro was about to jump, Hardy dropkicked the door open, and Nitro fell onto the top of the door, paining him between his legs.[42] As Nitro was on top of the door, Hardy walked out the door to win the match and retain the Intercontinental Championship.[42]
The next match was a surprise Tag Team Turmoil match for a future World Tag Team Championship title shot.[41] The match started out with two tag teams and when a team was defeated, another came out until the match ended.[43] The match begun with the teams of The World's Greatest Tag Team and The Highlanders.[41] Approximately five minutes into the match, Shelton Benjamin pinned Robbie McAllister after a superplex.[41] The self-proclaimed World's Greatest Tag Team survived yet another team, consisting of the legendary Jim Duggan and Super Crazy.[41] The third team, however, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team after Cade performed a diving elbow drop on Charlie Haas and scored the pinfall.[43] The final team, Cryme Tyme, won the match after performing a G9 and pinning Cade to become the top contenders to Rated-RKO's World Tag Team Championship.[41]
After the match, Jonathan Coachman and Vince McMahon were backstage discussing the personal feud between Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell. McMahon announced a match between the two the next night on Raw.[41][44] Kenny Dykstra made his way to the ring, mocking Ric Flair by wearing one of Flair's common robes.[45] When the match begun, Dykstra also mocked several of Flair’s in-ring mannerisms.[41] When the referee was not paying attention, Dykstra delivered an illegal low blow and rolled Flair up with a small package to secure the pinfall.[41][45]
Before the WWE Women's Championship match, there was a backstage segment with Victoria and Melina, where Victoria offered her the first shot at the Women's Championship if she helped her win it that night.[46] When the match began, Melina apparently accepted Victoria's proposition when she came to the ring to get involved in the contest between the two divas.[46] Her interference, however, was thwarted by Candice Michelle and Maria, who came to the ring to even the odds by attacking Melina.[46] Minutes later, Mickie James performed a DDT on Victoria and pinned her to remain the WWE Women's Champion.[41][46]
Next was the World Tag Team Championship match between the defending champions Rated-RKO and D-Generation X (DX).[41][47] Close to 20 minutes into the match, Triple H received the tag from Shawn Michaels.[41] He went on to execute a spinebuster on Randy Orton. While performing the move, Triple H legitimately injured his right leg.[41] Despite the injury, Triple H continued to wrestle.[41][47] DX used a barrage of Pedigrees, steel chairs, and Sweet Chin Music to incapacitate their opponents.[47] This bloody match ended when Michaels hit the referee and then assaulted Rated-RKO with a chair.[41][47] After the match, DX brutalized Rated-RKO and left them a bloody mess.[41][47]
The next match was between Carlito and Chris Masters.[48] The end of this relatively short match came when Carlito reversed the Master Lock attempt, Masters fell on Carlito and grabbed his tights to perform a rollup and successfully score the pinfall.[48] After the match, Masters added insult to injury by locking on the Master Lock and causing further damage to Carlito.[48]
The final match was the main event WWE Championship match. During the match, John Cena attempted and failed to perform an FU various times.[49] Cena remained on the offensive and continued to be, as he tossed his foe’s hardened forehead into the steel ring post and followed up with a Five Knuckle Shuffle.[41][49] When Cena failed to execute an FU again, Umaga seized control.[49] Umaga charged at Cena, and the champion managed to raise his feet and connect and superkick Umaga, allowing Cena to quickly roll up Umaga for the pin.[41][49] Cena had ended Umaga's undefeated streak and retained his WWE Championship.[49]
[edit] Aftermath
The feud between John Cena and Umaga continued on the night after New Year's Revolution, where Umaga brutally assaulted Cena after his match with The Great Khali and also interfered in Cena's match with Jonathan Coachman two weeks later.[50][51][52] At Royal Rumble, Cena successfully retained his WWE Championship against Umaga in a Last Man Standing match, ending their rivalry.[11]
It was announced that Triple H was injured with a ruptured quadriceps tendon and did not compete on WWE television for over seven months.[53] Shawn Michaels, however, continued his feud with Rated-RKO by teaming up with Cena and defeating them for their World Tag Team Championship.[9][10] After the Royal Rumble, the feud ended as Rated-RKO disbanded after their own rivalry began. Edge, Randy Orton, and Michaels faced each other in a Triple Threat match, which Michaels won to become the number one contender to the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 23. Michaels then feuded with Cena.[54]
Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro continued to feud as members of The Hardys and MNM respectively, until their rematch at the Royal Rumble, where The Hardys were victorious.[8] The feud then began to fade, as Joey Mercury was released from his contract, and The Hardys began to establish their single careers, participating in the Money in the Bank ladder match.[55]
The feud between Kenny Dykstra and Ric Flair continued. As a reward for defeating Flair at New Year's Revolution, Coachman booked Dykstra in a match with Hardy for his WWE Intercontinental Championship.[50][51] Flair interfered and performed a low blow to Dykstra, allowing Hardy to win.[50][51] On the following Raw, Flair defeated Dykstra in a rematch, ending their rivalry.[56][57] The feuds between Carlito and Chris Masters, and Mickie James and Victoria also ended after Carlito and James won subsequent rematches,[50][51][57] and they began to feud with Ric Flair and Melina respectively.[54] The match between Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell was actually a parody match, with talent from WWE's developmental territories portraying the characters.[50][51] This was the early stage of a major feud between Donald Trump and Vince McMahon, which would go on to WrestleMania 23.[58]
