[edit] Possibly worth including

If memory serves, for much of the 90s Cockburn would not perform this song. I vaguely recall him stating in interviews that he did not want to seem to be endorsing the violence suggested by the lyrics, and I attended several Cockburn performances in the 90s at which many people were surprised that he didn't play it. I know that he has started playing it again, however (most obviously and verifiably at Live 8, but I've heard him do it live at least one other time in recent years). It might be worth mentioning this in the article, especially if acceptable sources can be found on the reasons for it.
