This is the second time in a couple of weeks that I've been blocked, presumably because an unregistered user on the same IP address/ISP modem is vandalising. The first time was for 48 hrs and now this time I can't edit any articles until the 10th April.

[edit] Thumbnail aircraft images

Hello, I have put up for speedy deletion a number of your images which are thumbnails of larger images. Wikipedia software creates thumbnails automatically by specifying a "thumb" and "250px" in the image's tag, so we need only upload the original. If you were tweaking the contrast and levels, you can do that with the original and overwrite the old version. 119 23:58, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Ian, The filename you uploaded with had lower-case "jpg" whereas the original had upper-case "JPG" which is why you got a new page. If you re-upload as "Hawker Sea Fury-01.JPG" it should go to the right place. The wrong, unused image should then be listed on Wikipedia:Images for deletion. As 119 mentioned, there is no need to resize images or create thumbnails, so your cleaned-up Image:733px-Brewsterbuffalo.jpg should have been uploaded as the original Image:Brewsterbuffalo.jpg, and so on. I've put Image:Hawker Sea Fury-01.jpg up for deletion on Wikipedia:Images for deletion now that you've uploaded your improved version over the original. Note that you can always recover earlier versions of an image by clicking on the date/time in the "File history" on the image's page, as long as it hasn't been deleted by clicking the "(del)" link. (You generally only delete old versions in cases of vandalism.)

If you want to get any of your earlier mistakes deleted, the steps are:

1. Add the "Image for deletion" tag to the image by editing and adding {{ifd}}, perhaps with an explanation or link to the correct image.
2. On Wikipedia:Images for deletion, go to the current day (say, March 30) and list the image with a brief explanation of why it's got to go (duplicate, thumbnail, etc.) and sign and date your listing (with ~~~~)
3. After a while, if there are no objections, the image will be deleted.

If you haven't discovered it already, the way to link an image inline (ie., without it being shown) is to put a colon ":" infront of the "Image:", for example [[:Image:Hawker Sea Fury-01.jpg]]. Don't worry about having made some mistakes, you've started in the deep end by tackling images first. Geoff/Gsl 23:26, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Editing Images

Hi everyone.

As someone new here you may have noticed by now that the thing I do most is edit images. I use Photoshop CS set to 'Web Graphics Defaults' with a calibrated monitor (gamma 2.2 - sRGB) and generally try to get as much information and detail from an image as I can. Most of the images on Wikipedia are actually better than they look and I can usually make an improvement - or at least what looks like an improvement to me! On old (mainly B/W) images, I also try to remove any blemishes like those caused by dust on the lens, or scratches. In the case of a large picture which was originally quite dark, the act of lightening adds more information to the picture, increasing the file size somewhat and sometimes this takes the size over the 2Mb limit, so I then save at a higher compression - hopefully this won't be too noticeable.

Most of the photos taken by Wikipedia contributors themselves are very good, but I know not everyone has access to graphics-editing software so if I can make the pictures look even better, I generally 'tweak' them a bit, so if anyone thinks I have ruined a prized photo or made it look worse, then feel free to revert to the previous version. I generally try to do the editing at night when there isn't much ambient light, but sometimes when I adjust an image during the day, it may not look quite okay(!) Actually, I keep copies of the unmodified files anyway - I started doing this before I found out about being able to revert to a previous image!

I'm not sure what the edited pictures look like on other people's systems - they should look better on most, including Apple Macs - so feedback would be appreciated, if only to tell me I'm wasting my time!!

BTW, apologies to those who's pictures I have edited but not gotten-around to letting-know yet, especially Adrian and Paul - its just that everytime I find a particularily good picture of something that interests me (mostly aircraft) it usually turns out to be one of theirs!

[edit] Picture improvements

Ian, I'm sorry, but you haven't improved my aircraft images. To me (on a quality 19 inch CRT monitor) your versions are grainy and pale. You might possibly have pulled out more detail than I did but it’s at the expense of the pleasure in looking at the picture. The best example by far is the English Electric Lightning pic of XM974 (the middle one of the three) where you had a weird blocky mess under the fuselage. Sorry to sound grumpy but I have to ask you not to adjust any more of my pics. Remember, I’ve already spent a long time in Photoshop and NeatImage making each pic as good as I can, and so there’s not much left to adjust (the pics are scans off ancient badly-exposed 35mm colour slides).
Please keep contributing to WP, just look a little more critically at your adjustments.
I’ve reverted Airspeed Ambassador, English Electric Lightning, Boeing 707, Vickers Vanguard and Vickers Viscount. I'm sorry if you've wasted a lot of work but I guess your aim is the same as mine - a better Wikipedia.
Just for your interest, I’ve been putting pictures on Wikipedia since January 2003 and have now uploaded about one thousand three hundred.(mostly aircraft and cars). I use Photoshop Version 6 to do extensive processing before I upload. Best Wishes, Adrian - Adrian Pingstone 17:17, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Ian, The SE5a pic is a definite improvement. I've uploaded a bunch of B&W photos over the past year and when I started I had little idea of how to scan properly and less idea of how to adjust levels, etc. so some of the early ones are pretty dreadful. Feel free to improve any of the images I have contributed (all listed at User:Gsl/Images). If I disagree with any of your changes, I'll let you know.

Looking through your early uploads, possible images to delete are:

I've put these up for deletion. It turns out they qualify for Wikipedia:Speedy deletion as they are essentially duplicates of existing images. So all my instructions for listing them on IFD were wrong. 2+ years on Wikipedia and I still don't know how it works.

I'm no expert on photography and image manipulation. Perhaps some of your versions have been lightened too far but then that's just my impression. For instance I find Adrian's version of Image:Lightning.farnb.arp.750pix.jpg too dark and yours too light. Same with Image:Hawker Hurricane03.jpg. I am sure if I did a version that suited me, no-one else would like it. On the other hand, I have no argument that your version of Image:Tsr2.duxford.arp.750pix.jpg is far superior to the original. Same with the black & white photos.

A bit of coincidence; I've got a few images of Warneford but they are from the The War Illustrated published in 1915 on rather coarse paper so that quality is pretty poor. If you do contribute any images, if they aren't English-specific (ie., don't have English text on them), then I recommend putting them on Commons. That's where I now upload all the images I prepare. Thanks for all the improvements you made. When I said feel free to improve my uploads, I hope I didn't imply I was expecting you to do so. It must have been a lot of work and is much appreciated. My only comments are that I do find the Albert Ball portrait a bit soft now; for example, the badges on his collar are now somewhat blurred. And Image:Chateau Wood Ypres 1917.jpg is an awkward case. Lightening it to bring out the detail leaves it looking washed out in places (I don't know the technical terms). I would be willing to sacrifice the detail on the tree trunk in the foreground for a better balance of light and dark elsewhere in the image. It's travelled a fair way since I first uploaded it and has become a rather important image, being the first image on World War I so I think it's important to get it right.

As for Image:W Beach Helles Gallipoli.jpg, I don't feel there's any particular need to remove the major blemishes such as the blur on the left (which I assume is something close to the camera) and the fold line, because these are "authentic", I presume. However, if you regard it as a challenge of restoration, I won't stand in your way. The main problem with the photo is the dark horizontal bands in the sky which is the text coming through from the reverse of the page when I scanned it.

Also, I think you uploaded your (much improved) Image:M3Grant.jpg on the English Wikipedia (ie., here) rather than over the original on Commons. Same with Image:EdwardMannock1.jpg, though you uploaded your version to Commons as well. These can both be "speedy deleted" on the English Wikipedia, seeing as they are duplicates of images on Commons. To do that, just edit the image page and add {{db|reason to delete}} where the "reason to delete" is something like "duplicate of [[:Commons:Image:M3Grant.jpg]]".

Thanks for the tip on avoiding the text striping when scanning. I shall give it a try. The Rolls-Royce TMR picture suffers from it badly. As for the M3 Grant picture, it is safe to delete from en.wikipedia.org. The way the system works is if you specify an image M3Grant.jpg, it will first look on the local wiki and if it can't be found it will then look on Commons. So for instance, the image Image:Christopher Cradock.jpg used to be on en but is now on Commons. If you look at the image page on en, it says "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. Please see its description page there." but shows page links to Christopher Cradock on en. So if you delete M3Grant.jpg from en, it won't break anything, the system will just revert to using the Commons image instead. I have already done it for Image:EdwardMannock1.jpg which is now on Commons only. Geoff/Gsl 22:04, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I see that you added a link on the AWE page to RAF Aldermaston. I do not remember it ever being called that. Although it was built as an RAF field, it was allocated to the 8th USAAF during WWII. I have renamed the page for Aldermaston Airfield to RAF Aldermaston. I have also changed the Category from Category:RAF Airfield to Category:Royal Air Force stations Regards, Oldfarm 20:52, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

The picture was taken at the Bristol Water Works Head Office in Bedminster Down, Bristol. I can't remember the guy's name offhand, but should know it if I hear it, so who were you thinking of?

User_talk:Ian_Dunster, Michael 18:25, 2 November 2005 (UTC) here. I need help. I had a particularly nasty online convo with somebody named SoM, and it concluded like all nasty conversations do... The issue at hand is about Vance_Astro.JPG. I made it from a comic book in my collection, all of which happens to be some twenty odd years old, save for a few that are older.

The issue at hand is that the image is thought by SoM to be quite shoddy. That may be the case, but that is to be expected when one is dealing with an old comic book. Also, SoM used FU during the course of the communication, and cast the following slur: That it took me all day to think that SoM meant FUCK YOU. That could have been. Also, I don't have all day, so it is possible I misread the communications... The main point is that SoM was quite sarcastic and unhelpful... Please let me know who an administrator that isn't SoM who will help out. I would really appreciate that... Michael 18:25, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

I really appreciate the help... I feel that if one is going to use shorthand(FU for Fair use Unlicensed) and then come back and enter it as a link is not good technique; FU can be meant as F*** You, too. Seeing now that it is a link to a wikipedia text about fair use, clears things up.

Dear Ian Dunster, thank you for improving the image! Great work! I took the picture in the Flygvapenmuseum in Linköping. It is probably build by Svenska Flygmotor, but I'm not shure. I have to check in which airplane this engine was build in. The Saab J 21RA uses original RR-engines. Hi Ian,
I came across this picture while writing an article for the German WP about a particular bombing raid carried out with Lancasters on 14 Oct. 1944.
If you don’t mind, I would like to use your scan for my article, however, I got a question: To my knowledge, Duisburg was attacked at night (approx. between 02.00 and 04.00) in mid-October. Bearing this in mind, your picture seems to be much too bright (even the clouds seem to be lit from above – instead from below, by fires etc.).
Did you post-edit the scan to make it seem “brighter”? And most of all, are you really sure that this is a picture of the bombing of Duisburg on 14 Oct. 1944 (in fact it should be 15 Oct. anyway)?--Brunswyk 07:24, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. You were notified because you were the most recent uploader listed for the image. OrphanBot can't tell the difference between image tweaking and a brand-new image, and currently can't tell the difference between a revert and a new upload, so it just picks the most recent uploader and notifies them.

I've tagged the image as GFDL-presumed, since the metadata is consistent with the other two images User:Poldiri uploaded, which are explicitly stated as GFDL-self. --Carnildo 05:10, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ian. Wow, that's some research work you did, good job. The images are all very impressive, and I think LOC images may be used on Wikipedia with the correct tag. Since however the LOC explicitly points out to users that we have to ask for permission first from the Sächsische Landesbibliothek, I'm afraid this case is pretty clear. We cannot use those images unless we get specific permission from the Fotothek. Using similar images from other website that don't happen to have a copyright indication will not do, since those sites are probably in violation of the copyright as well. I guess I can try and send an email asking the Fotothek about using at least their images from the LOC, however I can pretty much guess what their answer will be. Without a link to the original file it is impossible to tell the source or copyright of the file. Could you please let us know which file it was that this is based on. I had a look through the deleted edits and unfortunatly the original image was never tagged with any copyright info. It also doesn't look like User:Rafti Institute is around any more so there is no one to ask about it's status. The original images were uploaded to the commons, whereas you have uploaded the replacements to Wikipedia (there really should be a warning when this happens, but alas there isn't). The best way to solve this is if you uploaded your improved versions to the commons over my originals. That way the improved images are available to all projects and we both get the credit we deserve. When you've uploaded the pictures to commons then I'll delete the local copies and all will be hunky-dory. Thryduulf 13:49, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
