How the West Was Won was a western television series that starred James Arness, Fionnula Flanagan, and Bruce Boxleitner. It aired as a mini-series in 1977 and 1978, and as a regular series in 1979. A total of 25 episodes were aired.
The show was a great success in Sweden (as Familjen Macahan, English: The Macahan Family) and has been aired several times since its Swedish premiere in 1978; the last occasion in 2006.
Many paintings by Charles Marion Russell were shown during the credits.
