[edit] October 2006

Having a problem uploading the logo of the HKAids Foundation, can anyone help? Thanks. I've basically tried fixing it for half an hour. Guess I'm really a computer idiot. 0101vivian06 09:32, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Shall we separate the history part of the foundations and the aims to make it clearer to readers? I think we might actually quote the mission statement of the foundation from their website, what do you guys think? 0101vivian06 10:10, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

One more thing, do you think we should add references to this page? The source of the information we got? --> to correspond to the transparency talked about in lectures? 0101vivian06 10:37, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry....in fact 219.77.39.10 is me(0101yolandatai06)

Hi Yolanda, about the heading 'provision of voluntary service', was wondering if it should be changed to 'What you can do to help?' or something along those lines? Reason: from the heading, seems similar to the 2nd part where we list out the services the foundation support. Let me know what you think 0101vivian06 03:47, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

yoh... anyone who actually looks at this page? Can i have some response pleaseeeeeee? :) 0101vivian06 09:41, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I've been watching the article. What was the question? shotwell 17:54, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

why the section of 'target group of education' has been deleted??==

thanks shotwell! can't tell u how much i appreciate your reply. just wanted to get some planning going on. seems as if this article is a bit messy. what do you think? 0101vivian06 01:15, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

I think the article is very informative and I am impressed at how quickly it has grown. I think it could benefit from a few things. The first things that come to mind are:
  • It needs references on facts such as statistics, risk factors, control strategies, the story about the child who was expelled from school, etc... I find that the verifiability and citation guidelines are pretty helpful.
  • Most people prefer that information being written into paragraphs rather than lists. The Manual of Style and Guide to Layout typically clear up any questions that I have about style issues. These are also helpful documents when the article seems messy but you can't quite put your finger on it.
Hope that helps. shotwell 19:50, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the tips shotwell. will have a look at those sections and try make this better! 0101vivian06 01:26, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

btw, no idea why target group deleted. but its added back already 0101vivian06 06:26, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

may i know who deleted the phone numbers and email of the organization? well, since this is not the first message of this type written here. i think we should put down why we did it if we do delete some major sections 0101vivian06 06:36, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

I didn't delete the contact information, but please remember that WP:ISNOT the yellowpages. --Geniac 01:40, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

thanks geniac. will leave out the numbers then. 0101vivian06 02:38, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

hi vivian! goood luck with your page!

=====GROUP MEMBERS OF THE HONG KONG AIDS FOUNDATION PLEASE REPLY TO VIVIAN'S QUESTIONS!! SHE'S NOT WORKING ALONE ON THIS PAGE... GIVE HER SOME INPUT!!! AND DISCUSS AMONGST YOURSELVES!!!===== 0101kikz06 07:00, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

vivz... yea as i keep tellin u.. leave it.. ur grpmates dun wanna reply itz their loss.. u do ur best!!! :) 0101kikz06 12:05, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to all groupmates, as I misunderstand that we will have the assigned topic though e-mail, so I did not know we have already assignned topic. I am late to join you all in our work here. I really apologzie for that mistake. I will quickly resume my contribution to this page, although you all have already done a lot. Hope there is still something I can work for.

0101arlei06 15:08, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

No problem arlei. welcome! and wasn't your fault anyways. don't worry about it. Maybe you could read through the whole thing and see if it's userfriendly/clear/good enough? Another idea that i have: add pictures and make it pretty... i'm currently trying to edit the page to make it nicer... i've also emailed the organization for extra info as well as some pictures. 0101vivian06 15:25, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your forgiveness. I will try my best. I have just gone through the whole article. Yes, like what you have said, it is a bit messy. I think certain points can be rearranged. Also, I suggest to use the notation like 1.1, 1.1.2...ect to arrange the point. Maybe it will make the articel neater.

0101arlei06 16:18, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Don't mention it, we'll all work together and make this a great article, yeah? 0101vivian06 01:26, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Dear wikipedia project group members: i'm really, really very sorry for not joining in your discussions earlier!! >.< The reason is simply that I can't figure out how to leave a message here...I also got linked to the "User Talk" page whenever I press anything...it takes me quite a no. of days just to know how to use the discussion thing...very sorry ar....

i'm trying my best to keep up with you guys and do editing. Also, I'll upload some pictures of the organization.

Again, really sorry especially to Vivian because it seems that I've ignored you...but the fact is that I'm an IT idiot...let's work hard!! 0101alisonlam06

finally can upload some photos I've taken by trying lots and lots of times...can someone help me to edit the SIZE of the photos coz I reli don't know how to do it, thanks!! - 0101alisonlam06

I'll help with that. The picture tutorial is helpful. shotwell 19:50, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
  • sob* I'm so happy there's finally discussion going on! Great pictures alison. No worries, I suck at the computer as well. Took me ages to do the infobox... in the end had to ask for help as well!

ALL group members: LETS WORK HARD!! shall we look at the sections shotwell posted up about referencing & style?? First thing we should is to try to add in the references(I'm hoping those who don't respond can also read this because it's hard to know where you got your references from, lets hope it's the case like alison, they don't know how to discuss here but can see these msgs) I've already added a reference section ages ago. so please use it! 0101vivian06 01:26, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Dear all, Sorry that i really join late as I didn't realize there was actually a discussion group. Also apologise for last time that i attempted to add a stat. of HIV case in Hong Kong and it turned out to be a mess. Thanks for vivian who contributed a lot and thanks for editing that piece of MESS. Up to now, I am still figuring what I can help for this page. Today I found a source of updated news on AIDS. I hope this is helpful for those wikipedians who have enthusiatic concern on AIDS. Just a few days more to go, let's work it out together!=)

0101nialeung06 02:01, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Dear all, after all I am not sure whether I should add the reference or not. Because it seems to me that it would violate the format of our page. However, I want to show respect to the writer of the journal. What should i do? Thank you~ 0101nialeung06 02:41, 29 October 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

Hey nia - welcome to the discussion :) you should definitely reference! can u take a look at the previous message posted by shotwell - there's this page under verificiation... that page will teach you how to reference it properly plus still make the page look nice! I saw the stats... but as i'm a computer idiot, i didnt know how to fix it either. so just wanna say: thank you to whoever who fixed it! 0101vivian06 03:14, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

hey alison, do you mind putting captions for the picture you put next to the publications, if you dont know how to do it, you could follow the format shotwell did for the foundation building, that's what i do - copy and paste what other people did if I like that format... haha. coz i dont know how to do it either. what is it actually? thanks! 0101vivian06 03:17, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Maybe I can help to read the format and style part

222.166.160.172 03:24, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

hey nia, i've read your new part. it's great to find news on the foundation - NPOV. but maybe you could read the article and rewrite the thing? rather than asking readers to read it themselves? thanks! 0101vivian06 07:33, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

heya all... i m not frm ur grp... but GUD LUCK WITH UR PAGE!!! yes itz hard figuring out how wikipedia works... u gotta keep trying new stuff until u get what u want... make sure to check out the Cheatsheet in the Help section!! esp for the resizing of pics and where to place them on the page!! Work hard!! :) 61.10.12.1 09:59, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Glad to see a lively discussion going on ^^ At first I don't know how to chat here so I try clicking on all your names coz there seems to be links...but then I'm taken to some user page and there's nothing there....and I can't any icons of "join discussion" or whatsoever...so I'm quite frantic...at last I finally notice "EDIT THIS PAGE"!!! Yeah~ ^^ So a message to anyone who wants to join in discussion but don't know how, USE THE "EDIT THIS PAGE" ICON next to "DISCUSSION"!!!

Also, thanks for getting the picture size right + the captions!!! reli grateful about it!!!

Since the grade of this article goes to everyone, let's work hard together!!! I'll try to put in more useful pictures, as I've been to the organization myself and get some pamphlets!!! Add Oil ar!!! 0101alisonlam06

Oh yes, a question for anyone involved in this page: I've actually got the hardcopy of the book Never Again! with me, do you think I should paste story summaries of EACH case into this web? Or should I just leave it the way it is now?? Coz if you reli want it I can do it. Pls reply, thanks!! 0101alisonlam06

You should only copy material from the book if you own the copyright and you're willing to release the materials under the GFDL. You can find more information in the copyright policy and Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ. I strongly urge against copy/pasting the material. Is it possible to write the case summaries in your own words? shotwell 18:37, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

hi alison, you should have included that "adding message" stuff earlier!!!!!!!It took me a century to figure out how should I add my comment in this page...HAHA~for the hardcopy of Never Again! It is really great for you to have it in hand. I really appreciate that alison =)My opinion is that it's good to describe the case BRIEFLY(1-2 sentences would be enough)as it can provide a clearer picture for people visiting our page. Tell us whenever you need help if that workload is too heavy for you. hey vivian=)I will try my best to do it. 147.8.234.34 19:27, 29 October 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

Dear all, as I can see from the page, "updated news on AIDS" is put under the title of "The Foundation's Collaboration with Other Organizations". However, I want to put the focus on the XVI International AIDS Conference. First of all, Connotea is actually a web site that provides space for discussion and management of reference. I believe it would be even better if I can quote the direct source of the conference. Secondly, I can't see the connection of Hong Kong Aids Foundation and the conference. Therefore I prefer to put it in External Link as a supplementary knowledge for our readers, other than putting it under The Foundation's Collaboration with Other Organizations . How do you guys think? 0101nialeung06 23:12, 29 October 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

Sorry to have my opinion separately, but I suggest to have our part of Publicity Programmes and Fund Raising Activities of the Foundation in point form. It seems that it would be clearer, isn't it? 0101nialeung06 23:32, 29 October 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

this is looking good :) hmmm. apparently people like things in paragraphs rather than point forms but I haven't had the time to read the sections on style yet coz I've got 2 midterms tomorrow! Will get back to it as soon as I'm done with those, soz. Do you think the pictures could be a teeny bit bigger? Maybe it'll look nicer... but I have no idea how to change them, being the computer idiot that I am... if no one knows, i'll just experiment tomorrow, don't wanna screw anything up today laterz 0101vivian06 01:36, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

hey vivian, it doesn't matter maybe I will try to look it up later on today. I hope I won't make it even worse. Good Luck for your mid-term! 147.8.234.34 02:35, 30 October 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

hey guys, how to edit the information in the box...i would like to add the e-maid address in it!! 0101yolandatai06 09:46, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't think wikipedia allows you to put email address in like that because it contributes to advertising...I think Vivian has tried putting the email in too for once but it got deleted.

ok, I'll try to summarize the stories in very brief sentences.

Add oil with mid-terms and projects!! 0101alisonlam06

Please do not include contact information in an article. See bullet points 2 and 3 under Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a directory. --Geniac 18:35, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks geniac. Know you have been writing this for so many times. EVERYONE PLEASE NO MORE CONTACT INFORMATION 0101vivian06 14:28, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Dear all, I have been watching this page for ages and I am really impressed with how eager everyone is in trying to make this article better. In fact, I have been working very hard to standardize the format, layout, etc. of the article and to make it more precise and concise by editing its content. However, I must apologize to everyone of you if my editing has ever upset you as I am always the one who steps on others' feet by replacing the HIV/AIDS statistics with a diagram and by deleting the contact details (or any other self-advertising elements) of the Foundation without explaining it in this discussion page. I sincerely hope that all of you would understand and continue to contribute to this article. Let's strive for the best with a NPOV!!! 0101kissssty06 21:30, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

kissssty how nice of you by finally writing something in the discussion page. as i've mentioned before in my comments, it would've been nice for you to explain things whenever you edit them. I know it's a hassle but this is a group project as far as i know. Besides making this article great, one of the aims is to actually learn how to collaborate with other people. well, welcome aboard finally. 0101vivian06 14:22, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Had tutorial today and realized we have been heading towards the wrong direction. We've only got 2 more days until the deadline. Maybe we should split the work to make this a better article.

Main problem = we have copied mostly from the website and need more sources of data to make this entry neutral. Our article might be too long and some things are unnecessary - people can always look at it from the website of the foundation, right?

Few questions that we should answer:

  1. What has the foundation done? (E.g. number of calls, number of target group etc)
  2. Controversy? Have they been effective/efficient?
  3. Find other sources of data - do not just list it, think of yourself as a reporter writing an article for people who don't know about this organization!

I might start deleting some parts that I think is redundant. Maybe i'll try posting up what I think is not needed. Once you guys are OK with it (if you respond quick enough). I'll delete it. thanks. Work hard!! 0101vivian06 09:21, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I think that it's important for us to make our page more concise!! Also we have to make it different from the original website...maybe we have to assess of its contributions( as vivian mentioned, the effectivenss of its service)...also extra information is needed!!...Let's work hard for our project!!!0101yolandatai06 11:25, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

problem - tried to put the chairman of the foundation in the infobox but can't seem to? anyone can help? 0101vivian06 14:42, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suggestion of deleting some of the information

I suggest to delet the parts of "recruitment of volunteers" and "Donation". These two parts seem like promotion of the organisation. As we should be neutral and objective, we should avoid such meaasge. We can give the information in one or two sentences, but not a paragraph or more. For the part of "recruitment of volunteers", we may keep the work of the volunteers, but the way of how to apply to be volunteers can be deleted. What do you think?

0101arlei06 15:21, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I suggest deleting the few paragraphs on "Recruitment of Volunteers" as it sounds really like self-advertising. Besides, I suggest deleting the part on XVI International AIDS Conference 2006 (but leave its link to the "External Links" section) as it seems to have little connection with HKAF (i.e. Have HKAF ever participated in it?? If yes, when and what contributions did HKAF make during the conference??). However, if time allows, it's better for us to wait until their "author" gives us the permission to do the deleting. 0101kissssty06 00:06, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Looking at the messages I feel great pity that I don't have tutorial this week (monday is public holiday)...>.< so I don't get any advice from my tutor. But lucky that one of us is there!!!

As far as this is concerned, I seems to be the one who starts the whole section on recruitment of volunteers stuff. So I'll delete it so as not to make it so self-advertising! I'll just briefly leave a sentence or two for that part. I suppose the part on donation shouldn't stay too.

about the suggestion to "assess" the contribution of the organization, I have some doubts...coz this may keep us away from NPOV. What do you guys think?

0101alisonlam06

Alison, thanks so much for your prompt response. However, please do not delete the part on donation as it helps prove HKAF to be a prominent organization (which deserves donations) in Hong Kong. 0101kissssty06 00:16, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Alison & kisssty - neutral point of view does not mean that we should present an equal amount bad & good things about the foundation, but rather present the facts as they are. journalist also has a point of view - as long as we evaluate things with truthfulness and committment to the public then it's OK. We could assess the foundation's work by simply just talking about the facts of what they have done! the readers can then conclude for themselves about the performance of foundation! hope that answers your doubts! As for the donation - i think we should not use whatever we have down there now (it's promoting to people to donate. but does not prove why we should donate as such. If you do want to add the donation bit - maybe we can talk about who donates to this foundation instead. 0101vivian06 17:25, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

dear all, sorry that I come late and I am the one who added the part of Scholarship for XVI International AIDS Conference. The reason for adding the part is that I wanted to provide more updated information and a wider vision/reference for our readers. However, if you refer to http://www.aids.org.hk/big5/04/conference/, I realize that the organization DID take part in the conference. They also took part in several international meeting like the 7th Taipei Conference on HIV/AIDS in July 2004. Suggested by our tutor, we should not add anything more on our page, but I think adding such information will make our page more comprehensive. I will do that after class today. I may add these under the title of "The Foundation's Collaboration with Other Organizations "

0101nialeung06 01:54, 2 November 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

[edit] Image

There's an image in the article that looks like it has been vandalised... --HappyCamper 17:33, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

This one...[1]. --HappyCamper 17:35, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

thanks. um. it looks alright to me? what should i do? 0101vivian06 18:14, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Slogan

I think the slogan should be mentioned earlier. Also, is this a translation of a Chinese slogan? "The March of AIDS Identifies No Boundary" does not sound right. What is the original? This should be provided in the article. --HappyCamper 17:37, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

can the person who posted the slogan try fix it? i've tried searching for it on the website, I have a 4 point mission statement but couldn't locate the slogan. thanks! 0101vivian06 18:14, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

dear all, I contact the organization today. Their PR told me that they don't have any specific slogan for the organization. They only have slogans for different programmes. However, the most updated one in November will be "共建和諧社會. 莫忘愛滋病患". They will use it in the upcoming events like Yong Men in the Aids(世界愛滋日) on 1st of December. See if you guys think this is suitable for our page or not? 0101nialeung06 01:35, 2 November 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06

[edit] Finance

important part to fix! Anyone could help me with the financial statement (an accountant)? I have written a part about the financial issues, but I'm not really getting the financial terms... i think the annual report is a bit contradicting - first saying they don't have enough funding, then saying they have surplus? it's the year 2003-2004 report which can be downloaded from their website. thanks! 0101vivian06 18:14, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

ahhh. i jsut realized there's a newer version 2004-2005 in chinese, but not in english! maybe we should work on that one instead. but i think i have to leave it for tomorrow... it's too late! appreciate any help i can get 0101vivian06 18:14, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

hi vivian, I found the English version of the financial statement in the annual report of 2004-2005. But I am not familiar with financial issues either. It will take me some time to look into it.

0101nialeung06 01:59, 2 November 2006 (UTC)0101nialeung06~

hi vivian, my opinion is that I am afraid it would be too details if we includes all those figure. Also, I believe including a few more years would be better than 2004-2005 only becoz we are working on the Foundation as a whole but not 04-05 only, right? I tried my best to invlove more but i could only open the annual reports of 2002-2005. And I put source of funding under the title of financial issue. Please take a look.

0101nialeung06 04:45, 2 November 2006 (UTC)-0101nialeung06

hey nia, thanks very much for correcting the points. the reason why i brought up the figures for the amount spent on staff is because i think that is what a lot of people are concerned about - that when they donate, whether the money goes to the staff or actually directly helping ppl... so maybe there could be a line about the most recent figure to give them an idea? 0101vivian06 08:52, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] PROJECTS

Dear all, I am currently rewriting the whole section on the projects under different(making it shorter and more condensed and more like an overview of what the foundation has done over the years, instead of just listing the different target groups - including some statistics to show the effectiveness) - since this is a major edit - would like to ask if there are any serious objections. will save the old edition just in case. 0101vivian06 10:57, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I really did a lot of re-organizing (hope i didn't make anyone mad -_-"), if you could please read through the whole article again and let me know what you think 0101vivian06 13:56, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] REPHRASING TO MAKE NEUTRAL - URGENT

I have read the whole article, still one big problem --> when we talk about the services provided by the foundation, I think the style is relatively biased towards helping the foundation as if we are one of their staff. I have rephrased the support services bit, and also the finances bit --> think these are 2 parts which are relatively more neutral. Biggest problem is the target groups, can someone have a look at it? I'll give an example that i encounter most to illustrate my point. I.e. saying that aids patients will be treated by well-trained social workers is definitely biased - how do we know that the social workers are well-trained besides from what the organization tells us. hope point is taken. thanks! i think that's it for tonight. will check this page again tomorrow. don't give up, the last day!! good luck to us all! :) 0101vivian06 13:56, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] REFERENCES

Sorry one last thing - please add any other references you have? It's a very short list. Add any articles you have referred to. I have added mine. thanks! 0101vivian06 14:02, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 3 NOVEMBER 2006

ATTENTION PLEASE MY FELLOW GROUPMATES:

During these very 24 hours, please kindly concentrate on editing and condensing the parts FROM Target-specific Programmes onwards as I have already close looked at previous parts and they seem to me that they are now very precise and concise already. In fact, it is now very risky for us to add in new information as we may not have enough time to edit it!!! So what we can do for the time being is to make existing materials as precise, concise and presentable as possible. 0101kissssty06 17:13, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Image:HK Aids Foundation.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
