Personally I hate Cary's translation and I regard it as the worst of Victorian Bowdlerism (the "he blew back with his trumpet of an arsehole" (Mark Musa's translation, AFAIR) is so badly mangled into prim Victoriana as to lose all its original comedy_(sic)). Its only saving grace is that it's the translation used in the Gustave Doré illustrated edition, a question of aesthetic merit, more than literary.

This article should definitely note the Doré link, and possibly comment on criticism of the text, if that's referencable by something more than my personal PoV.
