Originally opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway, the station is on the Caldervale Line, operated by Northern Rail, from York and Leeds towards Manchester Victoria and Blackpool North. The station is 13km (8½ miles) west of Halifax and 42 km (26 miles) west of Leeds.

The station has been restored to its original Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway architecture and it complements efforts made elsewhere in the town.

[edit] Future plans from December 2008

Northern Rail have proposed changes to the Caldervale line services from December 2008. Three trains per hour will run between Leeds and Manchester Victoria - one will be the current stopping service, one will go via Dewsbury and Brighouse, and include stops at Moston, Mills Hill and Castleton, and one will be a limited stop service - between Bradford and Manchester the service will only call at Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Rochdale.
