La place née avec la cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Cet édifice de 83 mètres de long est classé Monument historique et inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'humanité par l'UNESCO. Elle a été édifiée au XIIIe siècle et XIVe siècle sur le modèle des grandes cathédrales gothiques du nord de la France. La cathédrale a été dévastée en grande partie par les Huguenots, mais les portails, le plus bel exemple statuaire de Gironde, ont été épargnés. Le portail central est consacré au jugement dernier et à l'histoire de Saint Jean-Baptiste. L'intérieur de l'édifice est remarquable par la perspective de la nef étroite et longue.

Stift Fischbeck ist ein Stift im Hessisch Oldendorfer Stadtteil Fischbeck.

Gegründet wurde es 955 durch die adlige Helmburgis, welche mit den Ecbertinern verwandt war. Das Grundstück, auf dem das Stift steht, wurde ihr von König Otto I. geschenkt. Stift Fischbeck ist bis heute ein Damenstift.

Das Stift gehört zur Klosterkammer in Hannover.

In der Stiftskirche hängt ein Wandteppich aus dem Jahr 1583, der auf sechs Bildern die Gründungsgeschichte des Stifts darstellt. Dieser Teppich inspirierte den Autor Manfred Hausmann in den 1950er Jahren zu seinem Legendenspiel "Der Fischbecker Wandteppich", welches mehrfach in der Stiftskirche in Fischbeck aufgeführt wurde.
