[edit] Background
Heather's real name is Cheryl Mason, the adopted daughter of Harry Mason, who survived Silent Hill. She is the biological daughter of Dahlia Gillespie, who is responsible for her original injuries. When Harry escaped Silent Hill, Alessa came back as an apparition and presented him with a newborn baby, which is both Cheryl and Alessa herself reborn. In an attempt to throw the cult off should they come looking for them, Harry renamed the child "Heather" and moved to Portland.
She is also called Heather Morris, after the voice actress who portrayed her. The back of the game's case also refers to the protagonist by this name.

Official sources describe Heather as a "normal, fun loving girl who loves to shop." When it comes to her personality traits within the game itself, one very obvious trait of Heather is that she loses her temper quite easily at things that frustrate her. She shows many examples of this behavior throughout the game. For example, during the opening movie just before Heather dodges Douglas into the ladies bathroom, Douglas continues to follow her. She immediately turns around and shouts at him, "Are you still following me? Do I have to scream?" And when Heather is transported into the Otherworld version of the office building, she kicks the bath in anger and says "Did she do this too?"
This can also be seen in another instance when Heather first meets Vincent, where he instantly proceeds to insult her father, saying "I guess he hid the truth to keep you on his side, eh? That figures. He’s a pretty sneaky guy." Immediately, she bangs her fist on the door and yells, "Don’t talk about my dad like that!" However, it could also show her love for her father as Harry Mason is the only one Heather ever cared for, it is no surprise she would jump into Harry’s defense when Vincent criticizes him. When Harry dies, she is completely distraught.
Heather starts the game out with a switch blade as her starting weapon, which when inspected she comments "I know it's terrible, but I just love walking around with it". What this may mean in terms of her personality is up for interpretation. In the subway, an article on the paranormal can be read on the ground, which foreshadows an upcoming event in the game. When Heather inspects it, she states that she used to love reading the said publication and "spooky" stories for fun, implying a fascination with the paranormal. Heather also has quite a sarcastic streak, and adapts rather remarkably to the disturbing spectacles she comes across on her journey. She even specifically states later in the game that she has seen so many corpses during the ordeal that she's gotten used to it. Her brave as well as nonchalant reaction to various creatures and horrors late in the game, forged by her resolve later all point to a rather hot headed temperament in comparison to the other protagonists in the Silent Hill series.
As the game's story progresses, it is implied that more of Alessa's original personality traits, as well as memories surface in Heather gradually.
[edit] Wardrobe
Heather has dyed blond hair which is cut short and layered. She wears an orange sleeveless turtleneck under a white hooded vest with numerous front pockets and a green denim mini skirt. She also wears tall brown boots, a wristwatch, and an orange wristband on each arm.
After completing the game, a code is provided for the player, along with a new option on the main menu, which will enable the player to input this code for an alternate outfit. More can be unlocked by completing further new games under special circumstances. Most of the outfits consist of different colored tank tops and a pair of jeans, and some of them sport the names of gaming magazines. There is also another more "interesting" alternate outfit, “Transform,” which is obtained after inputting the code "PrincessHeart." It can be accessed by using a key which shows up in Heather’s inventory after the start of a new game. In a very Magical Girl-esque cutscene, Heather will change into her “Transform” costume. It enables Heather to run longer distances before becoming tired and it also gives her access to a powerful beam-like attack when no weapon is equipped. When using the beam, Heather says, in a low but feminine and seductive tone, "Sexy beam."
