Hayat Muhammad Khan Sherpao

Hayat Muhammad Khan Sherpao was one of the co-founders of the Pakistan Peoples Party. He was the elder brother of Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao. He was born in 1943 to the family of Khan Bahadar Ghulam Haider Khan Sherpao who was key player in the Pakistan Movement. He graduated from Islamia College, Peshawar, where he also worked for student rights. He joined the front ranks in Fatima Jinnah’s electoral campaign, when she challenged the Ayub dictatorship. [1]
His political life was full of turmoil but he proved to be a popular leader. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto opted for Hayat Sherpao as party head in the North West Frontier Province when he formed the PPP in 1967.

Sherpao was a a close ally of former President of Pakistan Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who had founded the PPP. Sherpao became Governor of the North West Frontier Province shortly after Bhutto had become president of Pakistan.
Sherpao was the Governor of the North West Frontier Province from the 25th of December 1971 to the 30th of April 1972.

He was assassinated on 16th of Feb, 1975, in a bomb explosion. On the campus of University of Peshawar.[2] Asfandyar Wali Khan was named as the primary accused by the Bhutto government. His death led to the government to target theNational Awami Party of Wali Khan banning it and arresting it's leaders on the charge of his murder, a charge they were eventually acquitted off.
The famous town of Hayatabad in Peshawar District has been named after him.
