Harlow Wilcox

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harlow Wilcox, also known by the nickname "Waxy" was also the name of a radio announcer for Fibber McGee and Molly.

Harlow Wilcox was an American country session guitarist from Norman, Oklahoma. In 1969 he released an instrumental single on Plantation Records (as Harlow Wilcox & the Oakies) called "Groovy Grubworm", which hit #30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart late that year.[1] Two albums followed.

"Groovy Grubworm" represents the biggest variation between the Billboard and Cash Box Country charts. Because of the two charts measured and weighted differently the various aspects of song popularity (sales, airplay, jukebox play), on rare occasions there were some major differences. Billboard apparently regarded the song as a rock record as it only reached #42 on the Country chart but, as noted above, Billboard placed it at #30 on the Pop chart (it was also huge in Canada, being a top 10 Pop record). Meanwhile, Cash Box regarded the record as a Country record, and it reached #1 for two weeks according to Cash Box. The record reached Billboard's Easy Listening Top 40.
