[edit] History

[citation needed]

Hansung Airlines was established in 2004 to serve as the regional low-cost airline of Chungcheong Province of South Korea, as is implied by its original name, "Chungcheong Airlines (충청항공)." The airline is a collaboration between the city government of Cheongju and the University of Chungchoen. Hansung Airlines ordered 1 ATR 72-200 in August, 2004 and was cleared to operate in August of 2005. It's maiden flight was on August 31, 2005 from Cheongju to Jeju Airport.

Hansung Airlines claims to be the first regional low-cost carrier in South Korea. As the country's first low-cost airline, it drew much attention from the public as it was cheaper than the other major domestic airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, and its popularity rose sharply. This spurred the establishment of another low-cost airline, Jeju Air. Hansung Airlines ordered its second aircraft in October 2006 . With its second aircraft, Hansung Airlines started its flight service between Gimpo International Airport and Jeju International Airport.

On 19 December 2005 the airline suspended all services in order to seek additional funding from new investors. Operations resumed on 15 February 2006.[1] Shortly afterword, it underwent additional difficulties caused by internal administrative conflicts.

The airline's first accident took place on November 28, 2006. While landing at Jeju International Airport, the nose gear of the aircraft broke, resulting in 6 minor injuries to crew and passengers. The runway at Jeju International Airport was closed for four hours. The bad publicity resulting from the accident greatly impacted ticket sales. As a result, the airline was forced to reduced prices to recover sales.
