I have removed the population figures quoted on a city and county basis as I see little benifit in the reproduction of them here, and they only detract from the flow of the article. This article is about the Greater Dublin Area, not a particular part of it, currently authoritive population figures are published in all city and county articles for Ireland in wikipedia - in the case of Northern Ireland they are estimates because of non-administrative status. Whenever the 2006 census results are out, I think the 2001 census population should be put, along with the 2006 population, into some kind of "Historical Populations" section. Jvlm.123 21:25, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dublin metropolitan area

Is the Greater Dublin Area the same as the Dublin metropolitan area? Several sources such as world-gazetteer.com and citypopulation.de use the Dublin Region as the definition of the metro area. The Greater Dublin Area seems to include a lot of rural territory. --Polaron | Talk 20:37, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

As noted in the article, it is not accurate to use the terms Greater Dublin Area and Dublin Metropolitan Area interchangeably. As you note, the term "Greater Dublin Area" is a term used in planning and development devices and includes extra-urban (rural) areas. The term "Dublin Metropolitan Area" (while referenced in some planning devices), is primarily used in terms of garda operation/court jurisdiction, and includes mainly urban and suburban environs. The Greater_Dublin_Area#Alternatives section tries to explain some of the differences between "GDA", "DMA", "Dublin Region", "Dublin City", etc but there are varying degrees of overlap that would probably best be decribed by a venn/set diagram of some kind. (And - at least in my opinion - it's probably not worth the effort, as some local government act, planning document or other statutory device will come out next week that either redefines them all, or invents an additional term).
