- Further information: Serbian parliamentary election, 2007
The Government of Serbia was formed on May 15, 2007 after three month long negotiations and fierce political scandals and fighting that much disturbed the population, and exactly 7 minutes before midnight when the three month constitutional deadline would pass. It is formed by the Democratic Party (including the minor Sanjak Democratic Party), the coalition of the Democratic Party of Serbia and New Serbia, and G17 Plus. The DS, DSS-NS and G17+ parliamentary clubs elected the new cabinet proposed by Vojislav Koštunica (DSS), the previous Prime Minister, with the further support of some of the minorities (List for Sanjak and Roma Union of Serbia) votes accumulating 133 of the parliament's 250 seats. The Cabinet was sworn 15 minutes before midnight, the deadline, in front of Milutin Mrkonjić (SPS), the temporary acting Speaker. The five new Ministers (Dragan Šutanovac, Božidar Đelić, Milan Marković, Mlađan Dinkić and Dušan Petrović) that were Deputies in the parliament have immediately filed their resignations, as per the Constitution which disables a Minister to be an active member in the National Assembly.
The key principles of the Government were:
- Preservation of Kosovo and Metohija within Serbia
- European Integrations of Serbia
- Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
- Improvement of the social status of citizens
- Fighting corruption
So far the government has succeeded in reopening the tables for the next rounds of negotiations with the Kosovo Albanians for the final status of Kosovo, the Republic's southern province under international protectorate whose Albanian majority favors independence. One month after the government was formed, SAA negotiations with the European Union continued for the first time after a half-year pause. During this government's term ICTY indictees Vlastimir Đorđević and Zdravko Tolimir were arrested and dispatched to the Hague. From the economic point of view however, the government didn't make progress, as the prices, of electricity and basic food sources mostly, jumped greatly.
Although Tolimir was arrested in the Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina), he made shocking statements that he was arrested in Serbia by the Serbian forces and then brutally and covertly shipped across Drina river to be officially arrested in Republika Srpska.
The Government collapsed on March 8, 2008, new parliamentary elections with be held together with local on May 11, 2008.
