Gork and Mork

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gork and Mork are the Gods of the Orkoid species in the Warhammer 40,000 and Orc in the Warhammer Fantasy fictional universes. Often, which one is being referred to is ambiguous and the action is stated to be the work of Gork (or possibly Mork).

The differences between the two deities in Warhammer 40,000 are slight: One hits you while you aren't looking, and one hits you hard while you are looking. They are also generally separated as follows: One is mean, and the other is meaner. Which one of the two gods is the first and the second is a source of much debate and conflict among their worshippers, and a considerable number of wars between Orks have been fought over that topic. In the Warhammer Fantasy universe of the Old World, the difference is more delineated with Gork being the god of strength (a popular phrase among Warhammer Fantasy enthusiasts is "Gork SMASH") while Mork is the god of cunning and is associated with magic, which suggests that Mork may be in fact a goblin god as he embodies characteristics more in common with goblins than orcs. However, there are still some spells associated with Gork (including the favourites of many Orc players, the Foot of Gork and Gork's Warpath, which brings Gork to step on the enemy).

Another theory about the differences of Gork and Mork was explained in a version of "Orcs and Goblins" for Warhammer Fantasy. It explained that Gork was "Fighty but Cunning" and Mork was "Cunning but Fighty".

There are conflicting reasoning's for whether the ork gods exsist for in 40k it describes the old ones as having built them yet in fantasy it clearly states that they are actual beings. indeed they are used in many of their spells. This is something that GW has yet to clear up.

[edit] The afterlife for all greenskins

When an Ork is killed his body is swallowed by Gork or Mork only to be spat out into another body. And so they go on forever always fighting, killing, dying and being reborn in an endless chain of reincarnations.

In Warhammer 40,000, the Orkoid species is believed to be a product of ancient genetic engineering to make them the perfect warrior race, and thus the deities they worship are beings dedicated to war. Both Gork and Mork are believed to help individual Orks in battle, but which deity an individual Ork chooses to worship seem to be of little consequence in the larger scheme of things. In the Games Workshop wargame Gorkamorka, Orks are divided into 'Gorkas' and 'Morkas', depending on which god they worship. The difference is summed up as follows: "Gorkas are cunningly brutal, and Morkas are brutally cunning." It's also noted in the Warhammer 40,000 backstory that even this is often a point of contention, and that Orks will often fight over which god has which attribute.

[edit] Trivia

  • The name of the god Mork could be an indirect reference to the television sitcom Mork & Mindy, where Mork (Robin Williams) is the protagonist, an alien who came from the planet Ork.
