Codename: Gordon is a third-party, flash 2d shooter made by Paul Kamma (X-Tender) and Soenke Seidel (Warbeast) for Nuclear Vision and Valve Software. It was distributed over Valve Software's Steam delivery system. Although it was not created by Valve, on Steam it was listed on the official Valve products page, along with the Half-Life series, Counter-Strike, and Team Fortress Classic. The game was made available before the official release of Half-Life 2 as a form of publicity, and was available free of charge to anyone with a valid Steam account.[1]

Codename: Gordon is an "alternative take" on the storyline of Half-Life 2. The player controls Gordon Freeman in and around City 17, battling Combine forces, headcrabs, and other familiar enemies while encountering allies such as Alyx and Eli Vance. However, Codename: Gordon is quite unlike Half-Life 2 in that Codename is exclusively two-dimensional.

The player uses the keyboard to move Gordon left or right or to have him jump. Gordon's aim is controlled independently with the mouse, allowing him to aim 360 degrees.

Unlike the three-dimensional Half-Life games, the player is able to communicate somewhat with other characters. Allies speak in full text sentences (Codename does not feature voice acting), to which Gordon can "respond" by using emoticons such as ;-(, ^_^, and ಠ_ಠ

The game has now been removed from Steam due to its developer's bankruptcy causing their official site to be replaced with a hentai site. Since access to the site is hard coded into the game, Valve was forced to remove it from the site catalogue. You can still install the game by putting steam://install/92 in your address bar.

The game has been criticized due to its demanding system requirements, considering the complexity of the game. A 1.6 GHz processor is required, because the game uses Adobe Flash and therefore cannot utilize a 3D graphics card to accelerate graphics rendering.
