Godfrey was a medieval Bishop of Chichester. He may occasionally have been referred to as William.[1]
He was nominated to the office in 1088, and died September 25, 1088.[1] Little is known of his background, except he had been a royal chaplain.[2][3][4] So little was known of him, that William of Malmesbury mistakenly calls him William instead of Godfrey, and had nothing else to say of him.[5] A papal absolution for all his sins was buried with him,[6] which had been inscribed on a lead cross and was found in the nineteenth century.[7] After his death, the see was vacant until 1090 or 1091.[8]
