[edit] History
Established in 1878 as all-volunteer, the department was in the back of the Sanders and Jenkins Building, which most know by the Girard Book and News. The departments first purchase was a horse drawn engine for $760. Later it was moved to its current location on Liberty Street. In 1967, the top floor of the original section of the Liberty St. fire station was removed and the exterior refaced. The section is now used for office and living quarters. In 2005, The ambulance services were removed from the Girard Fire Department due to the city's fiscal emergency.
