[edit] Cheerleading

  • I deleted the following statement: Germantown is also well known for its cheerleading industry, hosting over 20 squads that are nationally ranked. It doesn't seem relevant and completely off topic. If someone feels like it should be back in the article, perhaps more should be written instead of just cheerleading. I'd reword it, but it's not offtopic is the focus is on what makes Germantown notable.

It is NOT off topic. If the topic is Germantown, Tennessee, there are three things that are big: 1. horses 2. cheerleading 3. Theatrical Dept at Germantown High School (also runs an awardwinning local television station). Someone should put this information BACK in.

The reason cheerleading is mentioned is that the area cheerleading squads consistently win national attention.

In Germantown, TN, a small town just 10 miles southeast of Memphis near the delta of the Mississippi River, two of the best high school cheerleading teams in the country compete for citywide supremacy. One squad, a multiple national champion and a city legend for as long as anyone can remember, carries the name of its hometown. The other, 15 years young and also a national champion several times over, doesn’t carry the name—just the talent.

The 20 girls clad in red, black and gray seem to transform into a team twice its size, performing routines complex enough to make even the most elite all-girl college squads salivate just watching. In 2001, the last time the two Germantown teams met in competition, Houston walked away victorious—for the second year in a row. The following year, Germantown HS moved up a division, to super varsity, and the rival squads found themselves in a unique position.

“We practiced with them last year, and we pull for each other at Nationals now,” says Mary John Oakley, coach of the Houston Mustangs for the past 15 years. “That’s a big switch.”



I do agree that cheerleading is an important part of our community. A lot of my friends are cheerleaders. I do know that we are known for our cheer squads, but I don't think that it should be a major part of our city's article.

We have had some vandalism on Jan. 26, which I have reverted--it stated that Germantown was home to "retail and prositution services". This was a flagrant violation, and the user should be dealt with swiftly.-Kmaguir1 06:03, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Germantown High School is a high school of excellence and tradition. Built in the early 1900's, got its nickname the Red Devils from the volunteer fire fighters who were made up of the Germantown High School seniors during WWII. The Fire truck was nicknamed Red Devil 1 and when the call came out for a fire, people would say "Here come the Red Devils." The football Red Devils are West Tennessee's most suceesful. Two State championships 1983 and 2003. Four Runner Up teams in 1980, 1986, 1990 and 1994. The baseball Red Devils have one state and national titles.The Cheerleaders are 3 time National Champions. Traditions run deep at GHS and make Germantown, TN a great place to live and grow up. Germantown Alumni visit www.germantownreddevilsfootball.com.

I don't see how any of this has to do with the context of this article. If anything, the above should be merged with Germantown High School (Germantown, Tennessee). Drastic0612 04:45, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
