[edit] Man Poses As Federal Agent
A man allegedly posing as federal agent kicks in doors, conducts raids, and earns the trust of cops in Gerald, MO. He may even have had access to police computers. The only problem: FBI agents say he isn't a federal agent.
This man apparently had a badge, a car decked out with lights, radios and guns, and apparently pretty perfect paperwork to back up his claim. It looks like one thing he didn't have was the right to conduct police work, not only in Franklin County but likely any other for that matter.
He fooled a lot of suspects, a small town police department and maybe even Franklin County deputies but he couldn't fool a small town reporter, Linda Trest. "One of the most bizarre things that I have ever heard," says Trest. "I know a lot of guys would like to pretend that they are cops but to have the guts to go out and do it.”
After Trest says she received at least three calls from concerned citizens about a federal agent allegedly not using warrants to conduct raids and roughing suspects up she made some calls. Iit didn't take the reporter with the Gasconade County Republican long to figure out the man conducting the raids wasn't a federal agent and wasn't even a cop not even qualified to be the code enforcer the town hired him to be.
"He fooled this police department he certainly fooled this board of alderman and the mayor he completely snowed them and the city attorney they were all 100 percent behind him."
Because of the apparent ruse Gerald's Police Chief Ryan McCrary and two officers are on paid leave pending an investigation into what they knew and what they did or didn't do to verify this man's story. This supposed agent may have even fooled Franklin County deputies according to Gerald chief's attorney Mike Schaller.
"This guy checked out," says Schaller, "this guy checked out to the board to the chief of police checked out with Franklin County who had a deputy riding around with him and checked out the satisfaction of St. Louis County."
No comment from Franklin County Prosecutor Bob Parks on any deputies being involved or other departments involved but he did say his office, the sheriff's department, and the FBI are investigating the man and his part in several cases in town, including one that accuses a local pharmacist of making meth. Just one of many cases that could be in jeopardy, if indeed a fake cop was on the case.
“All of my cases will be reviewed after this investigation to see if there will be any problems with any of the cases that we pending or filed at this time," says Prosecutor Parks.
According to a Franklin County Sheriff's Department press release the suspect was arrested, released and has not been charged yet. The FBI is also on the case and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department is also conducting an internal investigation into whether or not deputies worked with this man. As far as Chief McCrary and his officers' futures, the Gerald Town Board is considering if they will keep their jobs or not.
