[edit] History
George Wythe College was founded in September, 1992 as a branch of Coral Ridge Baptist University by Donald Sills, with the assistance of Coral Ridge student Oliver DeMille, who was on leave from his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University at the time.
The school at one time was housed in the basement of a dentist's office on Main Street in Cedar City, Utah, but has since moved into its own facility on Sage Drive. The school is constructing a new campus in Monticello, Utah.[3] The new campus in Monticello is for the expanding college. The college will eventually be named "George Wythe University".[4]
[edit] Programs
George Wythe College offers the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts in Statesmanship
- Master of Arts in Education
- Master of Arts in Political Economy
- Doctorate of Philosophy in Constitutional Law: "The Thomas Jefferson Degree"
Several off-campus programs are available. For instance, the distance program offers telephone mentoring.[5]
A constant challenge for the college is that no degree offered is accredited, making it difficult for graduates to enter other programs. It is unknown how many students with degrees exclusively from George Wythe College have attended outside graduate programs.
[edit] Accreditation
As of May, 2008, George Wythe College remains unaccredited.[1] Since 2006, George Wythe College has sought accreditation with the American Academy for Liberal Education. The college expects to know whether or not their attempt has been successful by Spring of 2009.[6]
[edit] Students
Student life is centered around the attractions of Cedar City, Utah, including the Utah Summer Games and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. The city boasts a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Students also socialize regularly with students of nearby Southern Utah University.
The college sits next to a theater frequented by students. Students typically live with friends of the college who rent rooms and houses to them. The college's physical plant consists of a single, very small building, with no space for on-campus housing.
George Wythe College has among its faculty, 23 administrators, professors, mentors, and adjuncts.[7]
Notable faculty members include:
- Oliver DeMille, author
- Gregory B. Hawkins, attorney and unsuccessful candidate for various political offices in Utah
[edit] Tuition and fees
As of Fall, 2008 on campus tuition and fees for a Bachelors degree is $7500 per semester. Course materials and books are an additional $450 per semester.[8] Tuition for a Master's degree is $8500 per semester, including $450 for books and materials.[9] Tuition for the Doctorate is $9500 per semester.[10] While scholarships are available directly from the College, federal financial aid is not available to students at George Wythe College since it is unaccredited.
Students typically work for Comanity, a fundraising firm, during the summer to help offset educational costs.[4]
