Gay's the Word is a musical with book and music by Ivor Novello and lyrics by Alan Melville. Its premiere performance was at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England, on 17 October 1950. It transferred to the Saville Theatre in London, opening there on 16 February 1951. It ran for 504 performances.
The story of Gay's the Word centres around Gay Daventry (the role written for and played by Cicely Courtneidge) attempting to bring a musical to London. Sadly it does not turn out as a success.
