[edit] Flag design vs. Coats-of-Arms

My inclination would be to remove flags where animals appear as a component of a Coat-of-Arms which is then an element in the design of the flag; leaving flags where animals are themselves elements of the design. I won't take action until consensus develops one way or another. --Dystopos 17:03, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

  • There wouldn't be very many flags left in that case as almost all of them are either defaced British ensigns or banners of coats of arms. Astrotrain 19:17, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
I agree that when an animal that is part of a coat-of-arms is so small that you can hardly recognize it by looking at this gallery, then yes, that flag shouldn't be listed here as it defeats the purpose of a gallery. On the other hand, I'm not in favor of removing all coat-of-arms designs. -- Himasaram 22:46, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Well we are supposed to portray the real world. The images we use of some flags might not be the best, and some details may be difficult to see when a flag gets as small as we show them here, but if it is possible to see an animal in the real flag it would be natural to expect to find it in this gallery. Remember most flags aren't supposed to be that small. If we remove all flags were the details are difficult to see we will have to state that in the heading. (This page contains flags depicting animals except those flags were the animal is difficult to see on this page.). So I am against removing the flags with animals in the COA. [edit] Wrong animals

There are quite a few mistakes with the animals in this page, here's a list of some I picked:

"Birds of prey" section has a few flags with birds are not considered "of prey": Royal Standard of Queen Elizabeth II in Australia, Flag of South Australia and Flag of the Governor of South Australia contain an Australian magpie in the flag, which is rather a crow-like bird, and not a bird of prey. Flag of Dominica contains a parrot. Flags of Wallonia and Waloon Brabant contain roosters.

"Marten" is not a feline, but a weasel-like mammal. It should be placed in a the "weasels" category.

The animal in the flag of Orange Free State is a Springbok (a kind of gazelle), not a deer.

Flag of Schaffhausen contains a ram, not a goat.

"Cow" and "ox" could be merged into a single category.

and many of the flags with more than one animal are only mentioned in one category.

Image:Coast guard flag.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
