[edit] Britney Spears

Britney's music is urban. Have you heard In the Zone is what she wanted to do. Charmed36 7 September 2006

That is the direction she has moved towards and will continue.

Yes, it was on a special on E! television called Britney Spears and she did not want to be a teen star anymore. It is not reliable because it is a television source.

[edit] Chart tables

Just to let you know, the Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/Tables for charts style guideline stipulates the use of the "wikitable" format with no background colour, and not tablabonita with #CCCCCC. Thanks. Extraordinary Machine 17:53, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

You can divide the chart table into two columns by doing the following:
Charts
col-begin
col-2

<!-- first block of charts -->

col-2

<!-- second block of charts -->

col-end
Hope that helps. By the way, I like that song! I bought my mum the album for Mothers' Day :). Extraordinary Machine 16:25, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, she really liked it. Rae's been really hyped over here, though - "Put Your Records On" was everywhere! :). I've listened to some of the album; my favourite song is either "Like a Star" or "Choux Pastry Heart". Extraordinary Machine 12:07, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alicia Keys

That was a strange edit. You can learn probably more than you ever want to know about reverting edits at Wikipedia:Revert... but the simple version is 1) go to the article's history page 2) click on the version in the history that was the best previous version of the article 3) edit that version directly by hitting the edit link -- you'll get a warning that you're editing an old version 4) save (you don't need to change anything in the edit field). Happy editing... Jkelly 18:25, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

People from New York is the parent category of People from New York City... so there's no point in having her in both, since one is the sub-cat of the other. As for the various X-American cats, we'd need a source that actually said "This person is X-American" rather than has X grandmother, etc. Mad Jack 20:36, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, we don't use the one drop rule, i.e. if you had an ancestor who was Italian, then you, your kids, your grandkids and all your ancestors, ever, are going to be Italian-American, period. Definitely not (not to mention that the definition of "Italian-American is "an American of Italian descent", not an American of Italian, Greek, Irish, French, etc. descent). It becomes confusing trying to decide who is X-American or not, so it depends on what the sources say. I don't think we could find a reliable source that said Alicia Keys is an Italian-American or an Irish-American. In fact, most people who are 1/4 or less "X" are almost never described as "X-American", either by themselves or by news sources. As for Alicia Keys, Jamaican-American, maybe, though I haven't looked for a source that calls her that. There probably is one somewhere. Mad Jack 19:09, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
If a person is, say, 1/4 or 1/8 Italian, you would be hard pressed to find any reliable source that described that person as an Italian-American, and, similarly, you will almost never find the person themselves describing themselves as that. Mad Jack 19:27, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, "Category:People of Irish descent" is a parent category, into which go "Irish-Americans" and a bunch of other categories of Irish people across the world. It doesn't actually list any people (the way it should be). I don't see the encyclopedic value of listing people because of the ethnicity of their grandparent or great-grandparent. Just imagine if we did that for, say, Wentworth Miller. We would have twice as many ethnicity categories in his case as we do regular categories (i.e. American film actor)! Mad Jack 19:47, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Well I think the English thing is an accident of birth. The article says his father was just studying there when he was born (i.e. his family is American) Mad Jack 20:04, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Depends on what the source says. If the source says that the person has X ancestry, then the person has X ancestry. If the source says the person is X (if they are American) or X-American, then the person is X-American (for Wikipedia purposes). Mad Jack 23:17, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Feels like Home

Actually, "like" shouldn't be capitalised, because it is a preposition in this context. If the album's title was I Like Home, then yes, "like" would be capitalised; see wiktionary:like. It's all very complicated :/. Extraordinary Machine 13:16, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

No need to apologise; like I said, it's complicated. I only realised "like" could be a preposition way after I familiarised myself with the other prepositions. One of the reasons for this is that there are some words, such as "like", that are capitalised on Wikipedia in some contexts but not in others. Extraordinary Machine 15:37, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

I see you put the pop genre back on "And I". I have been disputing with myself if it is a pop song. I had it there for a while then took it off. I'm not sure. Charmed36 22:17, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Emma Bunton's Downtown

Hey... just thought I'd let you know that I've moved your RM from "controversial" to "uncontroversial", as the name Downtown (Emma Bunton song) is consistent with other song articles on Wikipedia, so it can be "speedy" moved!  ;-) robwingfield «TC» 16:03, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mary J. Blige

I really don't even think you are fully reading the version you keep changing it to. There are many sections that are poorly written and redundant. The changes that were made on the version you keep reverting it from make the most sense. No ones reverting just because. All the info is the same just better formatted so that it follows the pattern set by the rest of the article. Studio albums have sections dedicated to them, while all non-studio albums are talked about in the section of whatever album era they came out in. Mary's Reflections album is NOT a studio album and shouldn't be treated as though it is. It is a in between album project just like her two remix albums and live album and none of them have they're own section. Try reading things first before you change them and stop looking at the fact that its just different than the last version you saw. Work with people for the betterment of articles not against them. [edit] Reverted changes on The Soul Sessions

Just a short note letting you know I've reverted you changes on The Soul Sessions, because they were moving away from WP:MOS and WP:ALBUM. See specifically about using headers instead of bolding, about using ndashes, and about marking up ordered lists properly. It looks like you basically reverted all the changes I made to the version you last edited. I don't want to start a revert war, just point out why I made the changes I did. Have a nice day. --PEJL 05:12, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

The problem with your version of Mind, Body & Soul is that it isn't clear that the bonus disc is a bonus disc. It reads like the track listing for the Dutch edition is the track listing of the main album. For consistency with other albums and for clarity, I do feel we should mention what tracks are bonus tracks on the main album and what tracks are on bonus discs. --PEJL 23:56, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
That's better. Thanks. But I still think we should mention "bonus tracks" in the other subheaders, for clarity, and consistency with other album articles by other artists. Even though you and I both know that they are bonus tracks, we should make it clear for other readers. Especially since numbered lists which start at positions other than one don't work in all web browsers, so users of such web browsers may encounter the same parsing problem as with the bonus CD. --PEJL 00:16, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I think you're right. OK, let's do it then. Funk Junkie 00:25, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Great! I'm glad we could work this out. (I also added back the word "edition", because otherwise "Limited Dutch bonus CD" could be interpreted to mean that the bonus CD is limited, rather than the Dutch edition (which contains the bonus CD), and for consistency with the other headers.) --PEJL 01:11, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
I understood your point. I'm glad too, and I'm sorry if I sounded mean or something. Funk Junkie 01:24, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mariah Carey

Err :)...you don't need to uncapitalise the first part of a piped link, because it makes no difference to how it appears on the article or whether it leads to the right page:

R&B -> R&B
R&B -> R&B

Thanks for re-adding the pop music bit, though; some people seem to be under the impression that Carey sings exclusively R&B. Extraordinary Machine 21:50, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Need a little help

You said: "Hi! As I have seen, you really know about images stuff. So, I'd like to upload one of these images for Joss Stone's article, but I'm not really sure how to do it. Would you mind helping me out?"

It is probably not going to happen. You need to track down the copyright holder for these images (which is almost certainly not Dan Madison) and then you need to get them to relicense them under a free license. Instructions on how to request copyright permission are available at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. --Yamla 14:58, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Common Template

Stop adding that Joss Stone single to the Common template. That template is reserved for singles found on Common albums, or otherwise released under his name. The song that you keep adding belongs in a Joss Stone template. 69.249.82.243 19:38, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] James Brown albums, songs and namespace issues

Thank you for adding an article on the album It's a Man's Man's Man's World. You created the album article in the namespace previously occupied by the song "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" which is contained by the album. I don't want to be contentious, but in the cases of James Brown's albums which were named for one of his hit songs, the songs have generally been much more famous and durable than the albums named for them. In this case, the song "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" has been reissued on numerous compilation CDs and recorded by a number of other performers, while the album It's a Man's Man's Man's World, according to its All Music Guide article, has never been reissued since its 1966 vinyl release (except in Japan). For that reason I think it is best to try and have the songs in the unadorned namespace and add the suffix "(album)" to the namespace of the album of the same name. In this case I renamed the album article with the suffix and redirected the namespace "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" to the article on the song. I similarly altered the other redirects that were pointed at the original namespace (redirects, especially double redirects, need to be changed when a page is moved). I believe this setup will be more useful to people looking for information on the song "It's a Man's Man's Man's World", who are likely to greatly outnumber those looking for information on the album (although a disambiguation page with links to both song and album at the original page would also be okay).

Thank you for creating the album article and I hope this seems reasonable. Feel free to write me back. InnocuousPseudonym 23:25, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

The disambiguation page looks fine, though I'm going to call it a "song" and not a "single". Thank you for taking the time to direct all those links to the song page.
By the way, the Fair Use Rationale you added for the It's a Man's Man's Man's World album cover looks fine to my untrained eye. Everyone (including me) is having to take some time to add these with BetacommandBot making the rounds, but it's nothing worth getting blocked over. InnocuousPseudonym 20:08, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion tags

Greetings! I saw where you had blanked Sweetiest Fruit in da South and replaced it with a db-nonsense tag. Ultimately I wound up deleting the article. However, by blanking the article without more explanation, it initially appeared to be an act of vandalism on your part! Only after I reverted your edit and read the article did I realize the situation.

A better approach would have been to delete all of the article save the one changed lead sentence with an edit summary saying "Deleting content copied directly from Kelis Was Here," then tag it with a speedy-deletion tag. And alternative would have been to tag it Nonsense article - copied wholesale from Kelis Was Here. Again, the key is, go ahead and tell the administrators exactly what the problem is—and if you're deleting the text, what your objection is.

Again, thank you for your work to clean up articles and spot problems like this. —C.Fred (talk) 20:52, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Misc in album infoboxes

Hi again. I see you are removing "Misc = " from album infoboxes. Please don't do that, see WP:ALBUM#Misc. --PEJL 20:18, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

You also reverted a large part of my change with no explanation. I'm going to assume you did that because you got an edit conflict and didn't bother to merge in all of my changes. I will therefore merge in your changes instead. Note specifically that only the first release date should be included in the infobox per WP:ALBUM#Details, genres should be comma-delimited in the infobox per WP:ALBUM#Details, em dashes should be unspaced per WP:MOS#Em dashes, the preferred formatting of track listings per WP:ALBUM#Track listing and "align=left" is redundant in left-aligned content. --PEJL 21:26, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Joss Stone

Hi! You can read WT:NPOV#POV in first sentence? for a rather lengthy discussion on the matter, but in a nutshell, terms such as "[award]-winning" and the like, particularly when placed at the very beginning of an article, have positive connotations and imply a positive POV of the subject — that's why, for example, those terms are used frequently in press releases from the artist's management or label. This doesn't necessarily mean notable awards and other achievements shouldn't be mentioned anywhere in a lead — for example, with the Joss Stone article, it could be written as "[Joss Stone] is an English soul, R&B, and blues singer, songwriter, and occasional actress. She has won x BRIT Awards and y Grammy Awards, and has sold over ten million albums worldwide." Hope that helps! Extraordinary Machine, loving Amerie's Because I Love It as of 18:55, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

If you haven't yet done so, you could explain to the user why it is POV (and direct him/her to the discussion on WT:NPOV; if you need any further assistance, though, feel free to ask. Extraordinary Machine 19:17, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Chart names

Hi, and Happy New Year! I just noticed that on Caught out There, you changed the name of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart to its current name, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. As far as I know, when a chart's name is mentioned in an article, it should correspond to the chart's name at the time of the single's chart run—on the Billboard.com chart history page for Kelis, for example, "Caught out There" is listed as having charted on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and "Get Along with You" on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play, even though the charts have different names now.

Thanks, and hope you're having a great 2008 so far! x Extraordinary Machine (talk) 22:32, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't know the exact dates either, so I usually just refer to the artist chart history pages on Billboard.com. I don't mind, and thanks! Also, I accidentally replied to you on my talk page instead of this one—sorry! Extraordinary Machine (talk) 23:21, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmm... I don't know—sorry! I'm quite familiar with her singles, but they're not all the same, and I know they may not be representative of her full body of work. From what I've read in various articles, doesn't she combine elements of contemporary R&B and more traditional, '60s/'70s-style rhythm and blues? [edit] Need a neutral opinion

If you have a moment, can you take a look at Talk:Thriller 25? Myself and a few other editors seem to be going back and forth about whether this should be in its own article. So far I've place a merge tage there, and the consensus could go either way (which is fine), but it seems to be the same few people going on and on and its been about a week. There are two main conversations going, here and here. Anything you could add would be appreciated. Thanks! - eo (talk) 23:13, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Gwen Stefani

[edit] Mary J. Blige

You seem a bit more in tune with this stuff. Can you explain the long slow edit war over her genre to me? Various anonymous IPs keep shifting it around to various versions of soul, hip hop soul, gospel, hip hop gospel, etc. and I have no idea what is actually true. I just keep the article on my watchlist because of vandalism, so I wind up checking out every change. 75% of them are these things.Kww (talk) 17:47, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Blige's main genres are R&B, soul, and hip hop soul, but there are IPs users who keep changing the order of the genres, wikilinking things wrong (for example, they wikilink the hip hop soul article to the hip hop music article, which is completely nonsensical), anyway, doing things wrong. I'll have to warn them if they continue to do this. Was that helpful? :) Funk Junkie (talk) 17:55, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
If you feel competent to know what should be there, then having you keep an eye on it would be very helpful. I'm personally surprised to hear what passes for R&B these days ... I tend to think of Etta James.Kww (talk) 18:01, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Song In A Minor

I am sorry that I did not take the opportunity to explain this better - I hope that you will understand after my explanation. First of all, UWC has been going only since 1999 - you will note the founder (Fred Chuchel [2]) is a youngish person - not someone who began this in 1957 as you suggest. He has been collecting sales data back to 1957 - but that does not mean it was founded then. At some point in time he "may" have had a reference to the sales data for albums in 2001, but in 2008, he does not. Finding it on a fansite is not a verified reference - please refer WP:V. The other issue is, that it is also stating a fact i.e. 11 million in sales, that is non referencable, as it is not on the UWC site. Therefore in all accounts, this does not meet the criteria to be a part of the article. As an editor for wikipedia, you should already know that the policy to include an item for inclusion into an article, especially if trying to state/portray something as a fact, is that it needs to be fully referenced, and this has to be a verified reference. Thanks for reading 60.234.242.196 (talk) 06:50, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, is there any significance in the order of genres listed in articles? Specifically Leona Lewis and her related pages. They're being swapped about practically daily. Just curious. anemoneprojectors 00:13, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

That's fair enough. I'm not at all bothered what order they're in, it just bothers me that other people can't agree. anemoneprojectors 20:13, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually I would say Leona is more soul than R&B. It's totally POV, really. I think the people who keep adding R&B to "Footprints in the Sand" are totally crazy though :) anemoneprojectors 20:25, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Oh right. I'm not really that familiar with genres, espcially the really specific ones, though I like the sound of neo-soul. Of course, she's also done rock, with the Avril Lavigne song "I Will Be", but that seems to have been overlooked... anemoneprojectors 21:06, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thriller 25

Hey

You said you wanted Thriller 25 to remain a separate article from Thriller (album). Just wondering, have you re-considered since then, now it's out? It's just we're trying to get a consensus going on the talk page. Right now thirteen of us want a merge, five people (including you) do not. [edit] Janet Jackson songs formats

Can you please explain where you got your formats from? And if you are so keen to adhere to them, why not change all the singles pages from Janet Jackson, especially the most recent active page "Feedback"? Reqluce (talk) 22:32, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Following other wiki users is not the best solution. Please adhere to the format in the featured article Hollaback Girl as an example, since that is the clearest form of approval.Reqluce (talk) 23:13, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

There are far more examples of featured song articles where succession boxes are directly before references.Reqluce (talk) 17:32, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Please do not change 'UK' to 'British' on Jackson's singles or albums pages. CDs and records pressed in and for Britain are distributed throughout the whole of the United Kingdom, this includes Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and the Midlands. Thank you.Reqluce (talk) 22:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

If you look at record databases from HMV, Tower Records to specialist record stores such as eil.com, both American and "British" releases are listed as "US" and "UK" respectively. This further translates into the actual print on the CDs themselves (printed in the US) or (printed in the EU). Furthermore, you find the music charts are the US Billboard Hot 100, not "American Billboard Hot 100", and it is the UK Singles Chart and UK Album Chart, not "Britsh Singles Chart". As far as the music industry is concerned, "US" and "UK" is the official terms used to mark territorial release geography.Reqluce (talk) 22:11, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Song articles

I know you like editing music-related articles.

Please subcategorize any song thats a ballad. I have subcategorized the category Category:Ballads into Category:Ballads by genre, with it's tertiary subcategories as well! --Roadstaa (talk) 06:10, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, perhaps you could make the article Category:R&B ballads, or Category:Rhythm and blues ballads. The article for slow jam purported that its criteria is any R&B track focused on being ballad-like. --Roadstaa (talk) 18:47, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
