That was a strange edit. You can learn probably more than you ever want to know about reverting edits at Wikipedia:Revert... but the simple version is 1) go to the article's history page 2) click on the version in the history that was the best previous version of the article 3) edit that version directly by hitting the edit link -- you'll get a warning that you're editing an old version 4) save (you don't need to change anything in the edit field). People from New York is the parent category of People from New York City... so there's no point in having her in both, since one is the sub-cat of the other. As for the various X-American cats, we'd need a source that actually said "This person is X-American" rather than has X grandmother, etc. Mad Jack 20:36, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, we don't use the one drop rule, i.e. if you had an ancestor who was Italian, then you, your kids, your grandkids and all your ancestors, ever, are going to be Italian-American, period. Definitely not (not to mention that the definition of "Italian-American is "an American of Italian descent", not an American of Italian, Greek, Irish, French, etc. descent). It becomes confusing trying to decide who is X-American or not, so it depends on what the sources say. I don't think we could find a reliable source that said Alicia Keys is an Italian-American or an Irish-American. In fact, most people who are 1/4 or less "X" are almost never described as "X-American", either by themselves or by news sources. As for Alicia Keys, Jamaican-American, maybe, though I haven't looked for a source that calls her that. There probably is one somewhere. Mad Jack 19:09, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
If a person is, say, 1/4 or 1/8 Italian, you would be hard pressed to find any reliable source that described that person as an Italian-American, and, similarly, you will almost never find the person themselves describing themselves as that. Mad Jack 19:27, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, "Category:People of Irish descent" is a parent category, into which go "Irish-Americans" and a bunch of other categories of Irish people across the world. It doesn't actually list any people (the way it should be). I don't see the encyclopedic value of listing people because of the ethnicity of their grandparent or great-grandparent. Just imagine if we did that for, say, Wentworth Miller. We would have twice as many ethnicity categories in his case as we do regular categories (i.e. American film actor)! Depends on what the source says. If the source says that the person has X ancestry, then the person has X ancestry. If the source says the person is X (if they are American) or X-American, then the person is X-American (for Wikipedia purposes). Mad Jack 23:17, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

No need to apologise; like I said, it's complicated. I only realised "like" could be a preposition way after I familiarised myself with the other prepositions. I really don't even think you are fully reading the version you keep changing it to. There are many sections that are poorly written and redundant. The changes that were made on the version you keep reverting it from make the most sense. No ones reverting just because. All the info is the same just better formatted so that it follows the pattern set by the rest of the article. Studio albums have sections dedicated to them, while all non-studio albums are talked about in the section of whatever album era they came out in. Mary's Reflections album is NOT a studio album and shouldn't be treated as though it is. It is a in between album project just like her two remix albums and live album and none of them have they're own section. Try reading things first before you change them and stop looking at the fact that its just different than the last version you saw. Work with people for the betterment of articles not against them. The problem with your version of Mind, Body & Soul is that it isn't clear that the bonus disc is a bonus disc. It reads like the track listing for the Dutch edition is the track listing of the main album. For consistency with other albums and for clarity, I do feel we should mention what tracks are bonus tracks on the main album and what tracks are on bonus discs. --PEJL 23:56, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
That's better. Thanks. But I still think we should mention "bonus tracks" in the other subheaders, for clarity, and consistency with other album articles by other artists. Even though you and I both know that they are bonus tracks, we should make it clear for other readers. It is probably not going to happen. You need to track down the copyright holder for these images (which is almost certainly not Dan Madison) and then you need to get them to relicense them under a free license. [edit] James Brown albums, songs and namespace issues

Thank you for adding an article on the album It's a Man's Man's Man's World. You created the album article in the namespace previously occupied by the song "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" which is contained by the album. I don't want to be contentious, but in the cases of James Brown's albums which were named for one of his hit songs, the songs have generally been much more famous and durable than the albums named for them. In this case, the song "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" has been reissued on numerous compilation CDs and recorded by a number of other performers, while the album It's a Man's Man's Man's World, according to its All Music Guide article, has never been reissued since its 1966 vinyl release (except in Japan). For that reason I think it is best to try and have the songs in the unadorned namespace and add the suffix "(album)" to the namespace of the album of the same name. In this case I renamed the album article with the suffix and redirected the namespace "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" to the article on the song. I similarly altered the other redirects that were pointed at the original namespace (redirects, especially double redirects, need to be changed when a page is moved). I believe this setup will be more useful to people looking for information on the song "It's a Man's Man's Man's World", who are likely to greatly outnumber those looking for information on the album (although a disambiguation page with links to both song and album at the original page would also be okay).

The disambiguation page looks fine, though I'm going to call it a "song" and not a "single". Thank you for taking the time to direct all those links to the song page.
By the way, the Fair Use Rationale you added for the It's a Man's Man's Man's World album cover looks fine to my untrained eye. Greetings! I saw where you had blanked Sweetiest Fruit in da South and replaced it with a {{db-nonsense}} tag. Ultimately I wound up deleting the article. However, by blanking the article without more explanation, it initially appeared to be an act of vandalism on your part! Only after I reverted your edit and read the article did I realize the situation.

A better approach would have been to delete all of the article save the one changed lead sentence with an edit summary saying "Deleting content copied directly from Kelis Was Here," then tag it with a speedy-deletion tag. And alternative would have been to tag it {{db|Nonsense article - copied wholesale from [[Kelis Was Here]]}}. Again, the key is, go ahead and tell the administrators exactly what the problem is—and if you're deleting the text, what your objection is.

Hi! You can read WT:NPOV#POV in first sentence? for a rather lengthy discussion on the matter, but in a nutshell, terms such as "[award]-winning" and the like, particularly when placed at the very beginning of an article, have positive connotations and imply a positive POV of the subject — that's why, for example, those terms are used frequently in press releases from the artist's management or label. This doesn't necessarily mean notable awards and other achievements shouldn't be mentioned anywhere in a lead — for example, with the Joss Stone article, it could be written as "[Joss Stone] is an English soul, R&B, and blues singer, songwriter, and occasional actress. She has won x BRIT Awards and y Grammy Awards, and has sold over ten million albums worldwide." Hope that helps! Hi, and Happy New Year! I just noticed that on Caught out There, you changed the name of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart to its current name, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. As far as I know, when a chart's name is mentioned in an article, it should correspond to the chart's name at the time of the single's chart run—on the Billboard.com chart history page for Kelis, for example, "Caught out There" is listed as having charted on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and "Get Along with You" on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play, even though the charts have different names now.

I don't know the exact dates either, so I usually just refer to the artist chart history pages on Billboard.com. From what I've read in various articles, doesn't she combine elements of contemporary R&B and more traditional, '60s/'70s-style rhythm and blues? You seem a bit more in tune with this stuff. Can you explain the long slow edit war over her genre to me? Various anonymous IPs keep shifting it around to various versions of soul, hip hop soul, gospel, hip hop gospel, etc. and I have no idea what is actually true. Blige's main genres are R&B, soul, and hip hop soul, but there are IPs users who keep changing the order of the genres, wikilinking things wrong (for example, they wikilink the hip hop soul article to the hip hop music article, which is completely nonsensical), anyway, doing things wrong. I am sorry that I did not take the opportunity to explain this better - I hope that you will understand after my explanation. First of all, UWC has been going only since 1999 - you will note the founder (Fred Chuchel [2]) is a youngish person - not someone who began this in 1957 as you suggest. He has been collecting sales data back to 1957 - but that does not mean it was founded then. At some point in time he "may" have had a reference to the sales data for albums in 2001, but in 2008, he does not. Finding it on a fansite is not a verified reference - please refer WP:V. The other issue is, that it is also stating a fact i.e. 11 million in sales, that is non referencable, as it is not on the UWC site. Therefore in all accounts, this does not meet the criteria to be a part of the article. As an editor for wikipedia, you should already know that the policy to include an item for inclusion into an article, especially if trying to state/portray something as a fact, is that it needs to be fully referenced, and this has to be a verified reference. If you look at record databases from HMV, Tower Records to specialist record stores such as eil.com, both American and "British" releases are listed as "US" and "UK" respectively. This further translates into the actual print on the CDs themselves (printed in the US) or (printed in the EU). Furthermore, you find the music charts are the US Billboard Hot 100, not "American Billboard Hot 100", and it is the UK Singles Chart and UK Album Chart, not "Britsh Singles Chart". As far as the music industry is concerned, "US" and "UK" is the official terms used to mark territorial release geography.Reqluce (talk) 22:11, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
