Four piper

The term four piper is United States Navy terminology for classes of destroyers with four funnels. These include the classes listed below:

• Bainbridge class destroyer
• Paulding class destroyers
• Wickes class destroyer
• Clemson class destroyer

Later destroyers (typically employing forced draft) would combine boiler exhaust piping into fewer funnels:

• Mahan class destroyer
• Gridley class destroyer
• Gearing class destroyer
• Forrest Sherman class destroyer
• Arleigh Burke class destroyer
