The South Pacific Games were initially held irregularly but since 1971 they are held every four years. The football (soccer) since the beginning of the Games took part of the competition, except in 1999.
In 2007, the Men's tournament will form the first stage of the Oceania Football Confederation's (OFC) qualification tournament for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and will be the qualification tournament for the 2008 OFC Nations Cup, while the Women's tournament will form the first stage of the OFC's qualification tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games.
