More should be abstracted from the Flags of the World Jamaica page[1].
I was in a bagpipe band. We sometimes had Jamaicans in full dreds carry our flags and lead us in parades. They said there was something significant about Scottishness and their freedom. They wore full kilts and had adopted the clan of a Scottish-Jamaican. I also saw a Bob Marley documentary once, which showed what appeared to be the St. Andrew's cross on a govermental building in the background. Though there is no 'official' consensus on the Scottish flag's influence on the Jamaican saltire, and the colors are of course all Jamaican!
Even odder though is that recently in Germany the conservatives have been using Jamaica's flag because of the color symbolism and their coalition party's colors. Khirad 20:36, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
The true facts surrounding the Jamaican flag are these. The Rev William R.F. McGhie was a Presbyterian Minister working before, during, and after Jamaican independence in August 1962. The Rev McGhie came from Glasgow in Scotland and was a friend of the Jamaican Prime Minister Sir Alexander Bustamante. The original Jamaican flag was to be 3 vertical stripes (a tricolor) of green, black, and gold. The Rev McGhie, however, commented to Sir Alexander that, as a Christian country, he felt that the national flag should reflect this and have a cross in it. At Sir Alexander's request, he drew out the Scottish flag substituting the blue and white of Scotland for the green, black, and gold of JAmaica as it is at the moment. As far as I am aware, Scotland and Jamaica are still the only two countries in the world to have a saltire as their national flag. I know these facts to be true as the Rev McGhie was my father and I was there when this meeting took place. I hope this information will clear-up any misconceptions.
[edit] Two questions
- Why is this not on the list of flags by country?
- Is this the only national flag that does not contain white, or any shade of blue or red? NBK1122 (talk) 16:39, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
