European Cup 1984-85

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The season 1984-85 of the European Cup football club tournament was won for the first time by Juventus in a close final against Liverpool FC. However, the result was left meaningless after the deaths of 39 spectators in the Heysel Stadium disaster. English clubs were banned for five years, with four-times champions Liverpool banned for six.

This ended a period of great success for English clubs in the European Cup that had taken place since 1977, and in Europe generally since Tottenham Hotspur won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. Since the end of the ban, only six European trophies have been won by English clubs.
