[edit] History
In 1932, during a meeting of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) in Los Angeles, a special committee was designated by the Council with the task of reviewing the conditions for the organisation of European Championships. The IAAF Council in its meeting in Berlin on September 24, 1933 appointed the European Committee with Szilard Stankovits as President. The first meeting of the European Committee was held in Budapest on January 7, 1934 while the first European Championships were staged in Turin in 1934.
The European Committee was elected by all IAAF Members at regular IAAF Congresses until 1966 when, for the first time, it was elected by European Members only.
In the meantime the tasks of the European Committee were gradually enlarged to the organisation of other competitions.
On November 1, 1969, the Association of the European Members of the IAAF was constituted at a formal meeting of the European Committee of the IAAF in Bucharest. Its Constitutional Rules were confirmed at the IAAF Congress in Stockholm, August 1970, and came into force at the first EAA Congress in Paris on November 7, 1970.
The Association is hereinafter referred to as the European Athletic Association (EAA).
