Talk:Ethnic Chinese in Panama

[edit] Proposed name change
I think the page should be moved to Chinese Panamanian as it is the format in which other pages are named (Chinese Nicaragua, Chinese Jamaican, Chinese American, ect.) -- LaNicoya •Talk• 03:57, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- Many of those terms are neologisms and aren't actually used in English, just invented by Wikipedians by analogy to "Chinese American". In general I'm opposed to this naming scheme because of the confusion it generates. There's no overarching convention for articles of this type (Special:Prefixindex/Ethnic Chinese in, Special:Prefixindex/Chinese people in, etc.). "Chinese Panamanian" doesn't get too many GHits [1] and even many of those deal with China-Panama relations or whatnot; when you put it into the plural form, you have only 33 [2]. "Chino-Panameño" is a better accepted term in Spanish, of course [3], but it seems the English-language scholarly works are not referring to them this way. Also, putting "Panamanian" implies strongly that the article only deals with Panamanian citizens, but as the article details, there's been an influx of 80,000 Chinese from the mainland in recent years, who may outnumber the older community; many are not yet likely to be citizens. cab 04:26, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
To be frank, I think both titles are equally acceptable. I think Chinese Panamanian should go with a hyphen for clarification purpose, yet the title is Ok without it. Though the current title sounds a bit limiting (unless I'm interpreting the word ethnic incorrectly), it doesn't include Mixed Chinese, nor those of descent only, or does it? BTW, Is there a mail option in Wikipedia? or just the Talk option? Alexlamf 04:48, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- "Ethnic Chinese" is typically used to mean Chinese immigrants and descendants. There's no real fixed definition for what it means or who it includes; a lot of the meaning is in the eye of the reader. Even "Chinese-Panamanian" might get misinterpreted as excluding people of mixed race; a while ago, a whole bunch of xyzian-Canadian articles got moved to "Canadians of xyzian descent" because some users felt that e.g. "Iranian-Canadian" shouldn't be used to refer to people who also had non-Iranian ancestry. I guess all these different terms should be mentioned in the lead. Finally, you can e-mail users from their talk pages if they have the e-mail option enabled (some don't). Happy editing! cab 05:19, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I also think both titles are acceptable but just thought that since the others were one way, this should be too. I see no harm in it since other terms are listed in the intro. -- LaNicoya •Talk• 05:28, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
