[edit] History
The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority first became a public transit system in Erie, Pennsylvania on 1897-03-01 under the name of the Erie City Passenger Railway Company. On 1888-10-08, the Erie Electric Motor Company took control of the Erie City Passenger R'y Co. [1] In 1896, Erie Electric Motor Co absorbed the Erie, Reed Park & Lakeside Street Railway. [2] On 1906-12-24, the Buffalo & Lake Erie Traction Company was formed through the consolidation of the Erie Electric Motor Co; the Hamburg Railway; the Buffalo, Dunkirk and Western; the Dunkirk and Fredonia; and the Lake Erie Fast Line. It became the Buffalo and Erie Railway Company on 1924-09-05. The last of its trolleys ran between Erie and New York on 1932-12-01. [3]. The streetcars were put out of service in 1935, at which time the Erie Coach Company began to run transit buses. In 1967, it became the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority.

[edit] Programs
The EMTA runs the LIFT program for senior citizens and people with disabilities. They also offer a "track-less" trolley that can be booked for transportation to or from events such as weddings, graduation parties, or reunions. Another program for EMTA is their "Bike on the Bus" program for bicyclists that allows them to take the bus to a destination while carrying their bike on a rack on the front of the bus for free (assuming that they have already paid the usual $1.10 fare). EMTA provides a water taxi service to Presque Isle for a $3 one-way fare or a $5 round-trip fare from Dobbins Landing. The EMTA also has recently started it a "Bayliner Trolley" service [4] , using trackless trolleys, that takes the place of the Park & Ride service in Erie. Right now, there is no fare but that could change in the future.
[edit] Fleet
EMTA operates an assortment of different bus brands. EMTA owns several Orion II's, New Flyer D35LF's and Gillig Low Floor buses. The Bayliner Trolleys are Gillig trolley replicas. Twelve EMTA buses run on compressed natural gas.[5]
