Encino Man, released in Europe as California Man, is a 1992 comedy film directed by Les Mayfield and starring Brendan Fraser, Sean Astin and Pauly Shore. The plot revolves around two geeky teenagers from Encino, Los Angeles, California played by Astin and Shore, who discover a caveman in their backyard frozen in a block of ice. The caveman, played by Fraser, has to learn to live in the new 20th century. Along the way he teaches them one or two things about life. It was followed by a TV movie sequel, Encino Woman, in 1996. The MPAA gave the film a PG rating for "mild language and sensuality".
[edit] Plot
During the first Ice Ace, a caveman (Brendan Fraser) is seen with his cavewoman girlfriend (Sandra Hess) as he makes fire until an earthquake causes a cave-in that buries them.
In the present day, Dave Morgan (Sean Astin) and Stoney Brown (Pauly Shore) are two high school outcasts.
While digging in Dave's backyard to make a swimming pool, find a block of ice containing the caveman. While Dave and Stoney are at school, the heaters they are using thaws the caveman and he comes to life. Upon exiting the shed, he meets Dave's dog, scares off the mailman, and uses a shovel to attack a garbage truck. Upon entering the house, his foot steps on the remote and he copies whatever is shown on TV. Upon returning home, Dave and Stoney discover that the ice containing the caveman has melted. When they enter the house, they find cavepainting on the furniture. After hearing the smoke alarm, they follow the footprints to Dave's room where they find the caveman starting a fire using some of Dave's stuff. Dave and Stoney enter the room and try to befriend it. When the caveman starts reacting to the phone and charges Dave, Stoney soothes him by showing him a lighter.
After a bath, shave, haircut, and new clothes, the caveman is named Link by Dave and Stoney who try to pass him off as a regular teenager (as Estonian exchange student Linkavitch Chomofsky) and Link becomes seriously popular at school and this causes Dave and Stoney to also become popular in the process.
But the stuck up and snobby Matt Wilson (Michael DeLuise), the school's most popular guy, after being annoyed at Dave and Stoney for getting friendly with his girlfriend Robyn Sweeney (Megan Ward), discovers Link's real identity and it's a question if whether anyone will believe his story that Link is really from the Ice Ages.
After Matt is defeated by Link, the after-party takes place at Dave's house where Stoney and Link discover muddy breast on the patio door. They follow the footprints to the bathroom where the same cavewoman at the beginning of the film is bathing. Thus, Link and the cavewoman are reunited.
