An EMD F45 is a C-C cowled diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1968 and 1971. Power was provided by an EMD 645E3 20-cylinder engine which generated 3600 horsepower (2.7 MW).
86 examples of this locomotive model were built for three American railroads. The three railroads were the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe with 40 units, the Great Northern with 14 units and Burlington Northern with 32 units. The Great Northern units were inherited by Burlington Northern. Two of the former Great Northern units were sold by BN to the Montana RailLink which operates at least one of them, number 645, to this day.
