This should be removed from the article:

Elmira has been experiencing a depression for a long span of time. There has been a recent decline in population, housing, land value, and culure and the arts. The school district has declining grades that are far below the state average. Also, the average income is low, mainly because many jobs have left much of the population unemployed.

There are no sources cited to substantiate it and is composed of too many assumptions. 24.97.72.28 13:03, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

• As no one has made any comments on the above text, I'm going to remove it. There are no sources and it cannot be substantiated. It is too vague. You can easily say that crime is going up in Elmira, but that's not really true....in comparison to other regions around the country. As an Elmiran, I also do not agree that there has been a decline in housing value (my house and many others have increased in value) and I do not believe there has been a decline in arts and culture. Those are my opinions and are unsubstantiated, just as the above text is....having said that, I am removing it. If anyone disputes it, please discuss it here, prior to adding it back to the article.Souldrifter02 18:01, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

How about making a reference to Upstate New York's general condition? For example, there used to be passenger train service to Elmira and Binghamton, but no longer. Something to show the region at one time had more industry than at present. Abe Froman 18:15, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea you present. I don't have any specific reference to cite on something like this and I believe that it would have to relate to the economic environment of the region... in other words if the train service stopped because of mismanagement of the operator, then that is a poor example, but if the train service stopped because of a specific loss of manufacturing jobs that it was no longer needed, then I think it would be an excellent example of the economic conditions in upstate NY. Interstate 86 does not pass through Elmira yet. It ends in Horseheads. I'm going to replace that sentence.

Let me suggest some re-organization for this page by someone familiar with the area. Note the repeated material also. Stepp-Wulf 03:03, 18 August 2006 (UTC).

Stepp-Wulf: I've been working on a Re-Org of this page, but haven't had much time in the last couple of weeks to do much...a lot of the duplication is because someone added the "People with Notable Ties to Elmira" to the article - which I'm not opposed to - it should just go higher up because the notable people like Tommy Hilfiger, Eileen Collins, Ernie Davis, etc. are all described in other sections of the article. If we move the notable people up higher and describe them there, then we can simply mention them in the other parts without describing them (like the stuff on the welcome sign).Souldrifter 10:58, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

This section seems to clutter the article quite a bit. It would probably be best served as just a list, rather than a bunch of little sections. Any other input would be appreciated. Che84 20:49, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I removed these individuals from this section because no substantial proof has been provided regarding their connection to Elmira and their respective articles make no mention of Elmira (or Dunn Field for the baseball players): Ian Martin, Wade Boggs, Curt Schilling, and Joe Valachi. Regardless, playing half of season in in Elmira at the beginning of their professional sports career [1] [2] isn't relevant to the cities article. Reserve the list to persons that actually resided or were born in the city. ccwaters 17:19, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

I removed John Hall (New York) from the list as it doesn't mention Elmira at all on his page. Was he born in Elmira? Did he live in Elmira? I'm not opposed to it being added back if there is something about his connection to Elmira in his article. Souldrifter 11:32, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

There was a phrase in "Facts about City Government" that said the city was an "entitlement community." It was not cited, so I don't know whether the term is an official designation. I struck it.
