The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 57 single-member electoral districts. These districts are often referred to as electorates or seats. Under current legislation, the Perth metropolitan area is divided into 34 districts, and the remainder of Western Australia into 23 districts.
The Electoral Distribution Act 1947 requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. Electoral boundaries are determined by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. The last electoral redistribution was completed in August 2003; it applied in the state election of 2005, and would have applied for the next election but for the passage of the "One Vote, One Value" legislation. This legislation requires each district maintain roughly the same number of electors, and that there is a review of boundaries before each state election.[1]
