Eid is a municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.
Eid was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Hornindal was separated from Eid in 1867.

It lies as a centre in between the other municipalities Måløy, Sandane, Stryn and Volda. Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Europe, is located there.

[edit] The name
The Norse form of the name was Øygir; this was originally the name of a fjord (now Eidsfjorden). The name of the fjord is probably derived from a rivername *Aug, and this again is derived from the word öfugr 'backwards'. The actual river (now called Eidselva) are running in meanders; from certain points it can seem to run backwards.

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). It shows the head of a horse. The region is known for its very own race of horses, called the fjording, which is characterised by its white and black mane.
