The Edinburgh Capitals are a Scottish Ice Hockey club based in the capital Edinburgh. The team play at the Murrayfield Ice Rink, close to Murrayfield Rugby stadium.
The Capitals are a successor club to the famous Murrayfield Racers team.
The team played in the British National League for most of their existence but in 2005-06 season they joined the Elite Ice Hockey League. They also run a 'B' team in the Scottish National League, which share their name; Edinburgh Capitals (SNL).
Their headline sponsor is Futurity Partnership LLP.
It was a difficult start for the Capitals in 05-06, with the roster unrecognisable from the team that finished bottom of the British National League the season before. The Capitals had collected only a small handful of wins as the half way point of the season approached.
However, changes made to the side towards the end of 2005, including the additions of Michael Kiesman, Mike Sandbeck and Peter Konder, helped turn the fortunes of the club around. The Capitals form improved dramatically in the second part of the season. The final game saw the Capitals and the Basingstoke Bison level on points, regulation wins and overall wins. In the end the Capitals 'won' the Wooden Spoon after an overtime defeat to the Belfast Giants coupled with the Bison's 3-0 away win over the Cardiff Devils.
At the end of their first Elite League season, Neil Stevenson-Moore received the Player of the Season Award, Matt Rich received Best British Player while Neil McCann received the Coach's Player of the Year Award.
Owner Scott Neil took on the mantle of coach for the Capitals second Elite League season. Previous coach, Tony Hand, left for rivals Manchester Phoenix at the end of the 2005-2006 season.
Despite a vast improvement, the Capitals failed to rid themselves of the wooden spoon. They were making a spirited push for the final Playoff spot late in the season, but hopes were dashed when forwards Gregor Slak, Lou Dickenson and Jason Silverthorn left the club for Slovenia. Despite several brave wins at home, the Caps finally ran out of steam.
The off season has brought news that Doug Christiansen has been appointed player / Director of Hockey, and will assist Scott Neil in assembling the Capitals roster for the upcoming season.
