The title Duke of Portsmouth[1] was a life peerage created (in the Peerage of England) in 1673 for Louise Renée de Penancoët de Kérouaille, one of the mistresses of King Charles II of England. The title, named after Portsmouth, became extinct upon her death in 1734. Her son (by the king) became Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond and Lennox in 1675.[2]

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ There never was a "Duke of Portsmouth".
  2. ^ As the titles Baroness Petersfield, Countess of Fareham and Duchess of Portsmouth were only for life, Louise's grandson would never have been entitled to inherit them following her death.
  3. ^ Her subsidiary titles were Baroness Petersfield and Countess of Fareham
