[edit] Request for mediation
Re Chaps I have filed a formal request for mediation here. Montanabw, Getwood, Dreadstar, and AeronM, to agree to mediation please go there and sign the Parties' agreement to mediate. If any of you do not agree to mediation, the request will be denied; of course, I hope all of you will agree. See Wikipedia:Requests for mediation for details about the mediation process. --Una Smith (talk) 04:24, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Excellent! I was actually going to suggest filing one of these and getting a formal mediator involved. Dreadstar † 04:35, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi,
Im an Anti-vandal, abuse report investigator and contactor and i attend the school that is using this IP. I have just found the talk page and I am currently taking the vandalism caused by users up with my network admin, i will let you know of the outcome.
I apologise of the actions of other users in advance Prom3th3an (talk) 01:52, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

- oh yes use a previous version without saying so, that was when i was a no0b. Dont you dare insult me again, i have put enough time into wikipedia fighting vandals. I do not have to take this up with my college, i do so out of good character. Prom3th3an (talk)

[edit] Elisabeth Hasselbeck
I would appreciate it if you responded to my recent comments on the Elisabeth Hasselbeck discussion page when you get a chance. Many thanks! Stanley011 (talk) 18:32, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not a party to the dispute, please work it out with the other editors on the article's talk page. My intent was to protect the article from edit warring and remove the WP:BLP violations. Dreadstar † 18:35, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- I have attempted to work it out by posting a series of arguments on the discussion page that as of yet no one has refuted nor even addressed. I have provided a source (on the discussion page) that supports the assertion that the "Wright/Dahmer analogy" was controversial. Art Smart has not provided any source that supports the view (which is the current version that you have locked in) that Hasselbeck's use of the word "racist" was controversial. I was under the impression that wikipedia required sources in order for claims to stand (the claim here is that Hasselbeck's use of the word 'racist' was controversial) but perhaps I am wrong. Thank you. Stanley011 (talk) 23:47, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see a clear violation of policy that would necessitate editing the protected page per the Protection policy on content disputes, so if you can't find consensus for your proposed change, then you'll need to take it up the chain; get a third opinion or a mediator. Dreadstar † 00:52, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Search with Wikipedia
I am not sure to contact regarding this matter, but I saw that you are a pretty active wikipedian and so I thought I would ask. I am very tired of the crappy search engine that wikipedia uses. Is there not some way to mimic google's search where if you misspell something it asks you "Did you mean _____?" or displays close matches to what you are trying to say? If I am unsure how to spell something, it come back blank and then I search google, it finds what I mean, I click yes and then the wikipedia entry comes up on google. Is there anything that can be done?
Thanks
[edit] Thanks for the delete.
No really, it was really mature to just delete an article that had active debate and honest questions about how to prevent it's deletion.

[edit] 2001 again
Hi — What is the usual procedure for getting rid of that December delete tag on the Interpretations article? I don't want to cause trouble by stirring things up anew, but it seems to me that if it came up again there would be little support for deletion. Can one just remove it after a decent interval? I could let Groupthink know, if that would be considered courteous.
Also, would sourcing more recent articles on some kind of hybrid biological-artificial intelligence, as a possible path for future human evolution, be considered OR, if there was no specific reference in them to HAL & 2001? My position is that HAL is the main innovation in 2001 over Childhood's End, as a development between 1953 (CE published) and 1964 that is just too obvious for Clarke to ignore, a link towards the Overmind. No idea how the balance between protein and silicon will play out in the long run, but following the CE train of thought, surely it needs to be considered. Yet I think it might be hard to find a good reference on the subject actually mentioning 2001 or HAL.
I don't know if you have seen it, but there was a 1963 Clarke short story, "Dial F for Frankenstein" I think was the title, that essentially has something like the Internet suddenly coming to life (and taking over) when a key telecom satellite is turned on. Fred Hoyle's novel A for Andromeda hits the same issue. (I wonder if anyone has counted up the number of times Clarke kills us off in his opus? For such a blithe spirit, it is quite a lot. I could come up with a dozen, probably.)
Cheers Bill Wwheaton (talk) 04:52, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- OK, whatever is standard. It seemed a bit incongruous since the article now is essentially completely different from the one discussed in December.
- I don't think I have a better reference for HAL. I will keep an eye out. Wwheaton (talk) 10:22, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Another Intervention
Hi Dreadstar. I'm having some trouble with another user. This user has made countless, minute edits to pages (changing information from say 1859, to 1852 and adding "I LOVE AOL" to the bottom of Steve Case). As you can see here, I've added a warning (among others) and they have been blocked before. Is there anything you can do? phoenixMourning ( talk/contribs ) 21:37, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Dread, got another one for you; this guy has also been doing these minute edits to pages... though I've reverted the majority of them, he still continues to do it. I've left him a pretty descriptive warning about it... to no response. Is it grounds for arbitration? phoenixMourning ( talk/contribs ) 14:38, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] UEFA CUP
Hi:
Can you get into the discussion on the UEFA Cup article, please? There is a big problem with a user that doesn´t recognize official sources. Please, give us a hand.
My argument with the other editor revolves around if the Inter Cities Fairs Cup results belong on Uefa related articles. I have tried to discuss the subject and posted my references several times on talk pages. But I find it hopeless to engage into a discussion with someone who lacks a basic grasp of WP: Civil. I requested for someone to arbitrate the impasse a while ago, but none of the admins made an attempt. If you're familiar with the subject, could you read the above linked discussions and give an outsider's opinion. That may help resolve this deadlock.
See you, --Ultracanalla (talk) 22:35, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I wanted to create titty as a redirect to breast, but noticed that it was previously deleted (by you) as "patent nonsense". Could you explain why this is not a valid redirect? Thanks. --Jameboy (talk) 00:49, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- It wasn't redirect when I deleted it, it was recreated from a prior deletion and contained a single nonsense sentence. Looking further back in its history, it was originally a redirect to breast, then redirected to tit in August 2006 (edit summary indicated it was more appropriate than redirecting to breast) and ultimately deleted by another admin back in September 2006 before the recent recreation. I don't know the particulars of that deletion, but I don't suppose I would have any objection to it being redirected to tit. Dreadstar † 16:48, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

- That's a bit of a problem. The checkuser did come back as "unrelated", so sockpuppetry isn't the issue. The concern is the user's rather combative attitude, and threat to edit war over maintenance tags, commented on by others: [6][7]. The user was tag bombing immediately following reversion of an SPA's tag bombing of the very same articles. The user has gone back and forth on the issue, saying he'll continue adding the fact tags then saying he wouldn't do it...then justifying the addition of the tags. If you believe the user should be unblocked, I certainly wouldn't contest it. Dreadstar † 16:43, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- An indef block and a week long block is way to harsh for these offenses, considering sockpuppetry is not a factor. -- Ned Scott 05:33, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- ScoutCruft is an obvious sock of another editor and was disruptively editing, as can be seen by the comments from the three other admins who responded to the unblock requests: [8][9][10]. As for R00m c, I've addressed that above, and you'll need to review all the post-block comments there to see why the block wasn't shortened after the Checkuser results came back. Dreadstar † 05:43, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- You thought R00m c was an obvious sock and you were dead wrong about that, so I'm not going to take your word on this without some actual evidence. Those other admins were apparently taking your word on this as well.

- After reading R00m c's recent contrite comments, I've gone ahead and unblocked him. Scoutcruft is another story, that one is a definite sock who was disruptively editing - that's the one I said was an 'obvious sock' - you've got it backwards. And no, the other admins were not "taking my word", they were making their own independent decisions based on the evidence..that's the way it works. [edit] Just a minor heads up
Hi D, if you could be so kind, can you watchlist Thoroughbred and Horse racing for a few days? And Kentucky Derby? The second place finisher in the Derby (Today, May 3) broke both front legs while being pulled up after the race, sort of a freak accident thing, and was euthanized on the track. Sad, (I was rooting for that particular horse, the only filly in the race) but for Wiki, this means the PETA sorts could soon be hitting all the racing articles with assorted POV edits. A bunch of us just got Thoroughbred to GA status, and in short, we would appreciate some extra vandal watching. Hopefully nothing will heat up, but well, you remember the rodeo fight...sigh. Thanks. [edit] Your Message re Tuberosa
Hi,
You left a message for me regarding my edit to Polianthes tuberosa saying that the edit was "unconstructive." Yet all I did was remove a line that consisted of semi-mystical musings that add no positive value to the article. The weird POV, quasi-historical, pseudo-religious nature of the comment make it unfit for use. It might be possible to make a coherent statement from the current edit, but I can't imagine what it might be and don't think the original editor had anything in mind that relates to useful linguistics, social naming conventions, distribution of the species, or anything else.
You suggested I explain my edits in the discussions page if I made any new ones, but I gave my explanations for its removal at the time I made the edit. You may not have read it. I think you are seriously mistaken if you believe removing gibberish from an article is "unconstructive." But if Wikipedia prefers gibberish, so be it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.130.204.82 (talk) 20:49, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note, I've removed the entire paragraph because none of it was sourced and it was not written in an encyclopedic manner, but it was not gibberish. If you have sources to support the content, then please re-add it and cite the source. Your edit summary was not very informative, thus the request for a more informative edit summary the next time. Dreadstar † 02:00, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, Dreadstar. You're right about the primary deficit of the entry being its lack of supporting references. If there is actually a genuine discussion within a discipline, such as linguistics or history, about the Persian naming conventions, then that might be an interesting bit of "trivia" to add to the text. But I was truly flummoxed when I tried to figure out what the heck those remarks had to do with the species being discussed. I almost felt as if I was being led into conspiracy theory and Nostradamus land. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.130.204.82 (talk) 22:19, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Just to let you know I have blocked this IP address for 1 month as being a likely sockpuppet IP of Tss8071 (talk · contribs), a user you indefinitely blocked, after reviewing the users contributions, editing habits, comments, and similarity of the IP address to other suspected IP socks of this user. If you have any comments about this block, please let me know. Camaron | Chris (talk) 19:55, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I have left you an update on my talk page. Camaron | Chris (talk) 19:20, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] The COOKIE MONSTER ate the cow
Fattyjwoods Push my button has given you a cookie! Cookies promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. Spread the WikiLove by giving someone else a cookie, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. Happy munching!
Spread the goodness of cookies by adding {{subst:Cookie}} to their talk page with a friendly message.
Hi just to make sure you’re not too hungry, I would’ve given you milk – but the cow just died and I tried to milk the bull but it kicked me in the face. *sob*. Anyway, enjoy the cookie!! Fattyjwoods Push my button 01:43, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] 203.122.239.199
Hi,
I'm a student at the school the uses the IP 203.122.239.199, i would like to propose that you permanently ban this IP from editing to avoid all future vandalism.
Cheers,

Hi, you just deleted the above article under A3. Do you really think it fits that definition? Hiding T 15:41, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well, with no sources, I did an admittedly quick search on the article's title and found nothing substantative. The article's contents were recently vandalized and the previous content was not substantive or meaningful - to the point where it was hard to tell what was true and what was not..if any of it was... Is it a notable character? If you want to restore it, I'd have no objections. Dreadstar † 15:50, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

- I'm concerned about User:Rubidium37 who appears to be a spa sock. Newly registered, (s)he started editing Race and Intelligence and its talk, with an evident command of policy, edit summaries, etc. Could you take a look please?LeadSongDog (talk) 03:38, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WP:HAU
Hello again. The Highly Active Users project has gone through a complete revamping per popular demand. We believe this new format will make it easier for new editors to find assistance. However, with the new format, I must again ask you to verify your information on this page. I attempted to translate the data from the old version to the new, but with the extensive changes, I may have made some errors. Thanks again. Useight (talk) 04:13, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] User:Godsmack00755
Might I ask why you lowered his block to 24 hours? He has proven that his only intentions are to create his userpage in the article namespace (look at his deleted contributions) and harass people. Email me if you'd like me to forward you the harassing email he just sent me, if blanking my page repeatedly isn't enough. Cheers, -The Hybrid- 22:29, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- Responding via email. Dreadstar † 22:31, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- Cool. Also keep in mind that most of his mainspace edits had to be reverted as policy violations. Cheers, -The Hybrid- 22:32, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank you :) -The Hybrid- 22:56, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] AfD on Dysgenics (people)
Hello! I am asking because I'm aware you're probably following what's happening there. My concern is that User:Jagz is in effect burying the page under multiple redundant comments which add nothing to the debate, rendering the debate page less and less readable for those who'd like to express their views. Is there a way to correct this? Could an uninvolved admin say move the less pertinent and lengthier comments to the debate's talk page? Or maybe there is another solution? Also, this edit is Zero g calling carrying out majority consensus "vandalism". I believe at this point it should be obvious they are acting in a disruptive fashion. Please advise.
Sorry to be bugging you again, but these are just a few examples or non-constructive comments from Jagz, all taken from the same article talk page, over the span of a very few days.[11][12][13][14] This buries useful conversation about improving the article and is generally disruptive.--Ramdrake (talk) 09:27, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_democracy There is no such thing as majority consensus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zero g (talk • contribs) 16:43, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] How about letting an unbiased admin deal with it?
Clearly you are personally involved if you let personal attacks like this one slide by [15] without a warning, yet threaten me with a block when I simply speak my mind and ask an editor (for the third time) to stop repeating an incorrect statement without making a single personal attack. Maybe you should ask another admin to baby sit the discussion if you cannot involve yourself in an unbiased manner? --Zero g (talk) 16:35, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've been responding to those comments that have been directly reported to me or that I have happened to come across. Please bring what you feel are problematic edits to my attention and I'll take appropriate action as I did here. Your comment is not just "simply" speaking your mind to ask an editor to stop repeating an incorrect statement, you are accusing other editors of vandalism and being liars. That's not only uncivil, it is a personal attack. If you continue making such accusations, you will be blocked. Dreadstar † 16:45, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi Dreadstar I'm just letting you know that this issue with Jagz has been raised with sysops before. I raised this with MastCell a number of weeks ago here and yesterday here. Slrubenstein brought some seemingly antisemetic comments by Jagz to MastCell back in March 08 as well (here).
If you review Talk:Jagz's history or see my post to MastCell you will see that I have already gone through a full sequence of template warnings to Jagz for civility, agf and tendentious editing violations - these warnings have been ignored by him.
You may also want to ask Raymond arritt about his experience of Jagz and Zero-g.
I am not involved in any content disputes with Jagz or Zero_g. Jagz's behaviour came to my attention through a WP:FTN post that was asking the other parent to circumvent an RFC--Cailil talk 18:15, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Just a by the way - do you know about the history serious of sock-puppetry at the Race and intelligence? If not you might want to look at the pages and logs of User:Hayden5650, User:Lukas19. You could also want to consider the information about 2 other editors involved there - User:Fourdee who is banned (by Jimbo) and User:MoritzB who was indef blocked for tendentious editing.
Also I can pass on that link about meat-puppetry if you deem it necessary--Cailil talk 19:04, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry to bug you all gentle folks again, but this edit, AFAIK accuses me of being mentally deranged ("possible paranoia"). Personnally, I think this is the utmost breach of civility, but I'D nevertheless appreciate a second opinion on this. I guess I need a sanity check. And, for the record, I also responded to the accusation directly on MastCell's talk page, hoping this wouldn't be considered a breach of WP:PARENT. Thank you for your attention.--Ramdrake (talk) 20:40, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism history of IP 190.77.40.162
Hello, and thank you for the block. I've manually reviewed all edits by 190.77.40.162 (talk) back to 17 April, and found that all appear to be vandalism. I believe I and several other users have undone the damage, but I'm of the impression that there might be a tool out there to confirm that no residual changes remain. If this is true, can you run this tool? Thanks. -- Tcncv (talk) 04:34, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Not anything you need to do, just a vent
Why oh why do the little children (presumably) seem to feel this constant urge to vandalize the hay article? Yes, I know the answer, just wanted to vent. Some days I really wonder why wiki has the "Random Article" feature and whether or not this is the leading cause of anon IP nonsense vandalism...(grumble). Thanks for the ear. Seems to be no appropriate barnstar, so how about a cookie? Montanabw(talk) 15:39, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Edit war on the "Lynn Conway" page
I am hoping you can provide some input to prevent a repeated edit war. Last week, you (correctly) protected the Lynn Conway page, which was devolving into an edit war between me and user:Dicklyon. He and I discussed the issue on the talk page and came to an agreement on how best to resolve the situation. The protection expired, and I edited the page in the manner to which Dicklyon and I agreed. However, he has now backed out of that agreement/consensus and is reverting everything that any other editor changes on that page. Any guidance or intervention would be greatly appreciated.
Help me, Dreadstar-Kenobi. You're my only hope.

[edit] WP:HAU
Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 17:52, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
